The Palacio Real is—as the name implies—Madrid’s Royal Palace. However, the Spanish royals no longer reside here because it's too large for even their tastes, and seeing as how the building is the largest in the city and the largest royal palace in Western Europe, we can kind of agree with the royal family. With no royalty actually living in Palacio Real it is now only used for official state functions. Over 2,000 of the palace’s rooms are open to visitors, with each room decorated with antiques from the Golden Age of Spain that you can't find anywhere else. Come see what historical treasures the Royal Palace has hidden (like the Royal Armory and Pharmacy)—just try not to get lost inside. Tours given in English are available to schedule or visitors are welcomed to explore on their own. The Templo De Debod is an Ancient Egyptian temple that was disassembled and rebuilt in Madrid. In 1960, the construction of the Great Dam of Aswan posed a threat to many Egyptian monuments and archeological sites. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian state gifted the Templo de Debod to Spain in 1968. The area known as the Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) is a neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid where some of Spain's greatest literati have lived and written over the years. Today it is an area which combines literature, a bohemian atmosphere, entertainment, shopping, and good food. The neighbourhood is formed by narrow streets which are either pedestrianised or with restricted access to traffic, and pleasant squares such as the Plaza de Santa Ana. This is an area where it is easy to find houses in which towering literary figures of the Spanish Golden Age such as Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora and Cervantes lived and wrote. This is why on the cobbles of many of the streets you'll find inscriptions and brief texts from the works of some of these writers. Another of the charms of the Las Letras quarter is its abundant offer of shops and businesses, which include everything from the most traditional establishments with centuries of history (such as cobblers, silversmiths and lute-makers) to modern avant-garde venues. You'll also find numerous restaurant and pavement cafes where you can enjoy the gastronomy of Madrid and the popular Spanish custom of 'going out for tapas'. Finally, the neighbourhood is ideally placed for discovering Madrid's cultural offer, as it is the site of the CaixaForum Museum and very near the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, as well as a stone's throw from monumental ensembles such as the squares of the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor. La Plaza de Santa Ana was built in the 19th century in central Madrid, and has since become one of the liveliest and most vibrant areas of the city. The square is filled with statues and monuments and surrounded by notable buildings like the Reina Victoria Hotel and the Teatro Espanol. However, the main attraction lies in the close proximity of scores of tapas bars, terrace cafés, pubs, restaurants, and Irish bars. La Plaza de Santa Ana is packed from early evening to the early morning on any given day—especially during the summer. It is also just a short walk away from the Puerto del Sol and the Plaza Mayor, so if you somehow manage to exhaust the area of awesome things to do (which we don't think is too likely), you'll have those as an option as well. Just don't count on needing them. SUGGESTED VENUES *Cerveceria Alemana: over 100 years old, Earnest Hemingway a regular here, and it is now often frequented by local artists and musicians *Teatro Espanol: originally built in 1583, and reconstructed in 1807 due to a fire, this theater has seen the performance of Spain's greatest production over the past 5 centuries. You can also take a tour. *Villarosa: flamenco dance hall turned trendy bar, the Villarosa was featured in Pedro Almodóvar's movie Tacones Lejanos. Probably the best concert club in the district. Just a few steps from our apartments and very close to the metro ("Usera" stop, line 6). Nice and bustling atmosphere, opening every day until 5 AM (6 AM on the weekends). Do not miss it!!!

Salamanca has a well-earned reputation as one of the wealthiest and expensive areas in the city. The district is a great place to shop if you’re aiming for luxurious designer brands. Along Calle de José Ortega y Gasset, you will find a cluster of designer brand stores like Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, and Gucci. Smaller boutiques like Bimba and Lola find homes in the side streets that branch out from the main drag. In addition to an upscale shopping experience, there are many fine dining venues in the area that continue the opulent theme. You can also spot quite a few international embassies in the district (including those of Switzerland, Canada, and the United States)—just in case you need to do a little shopping while you get your passport renewed. TIPS *Along Calle Serrano, you'll find flagship clothing stores like Aldolfo Dominguez, Hoss, and Üterque Address Salamanca, Madrid Duration 2 hrs. Hours Sun: Closed
