Food Scene

Lovely traditional Hungarian pastry shop - one of the best around really. Cakes and decent coffee as well. Try rétes (Hungarian strudel), beigli (Winter time pastry with poppy seed or nut) etc. Small place but great for getting your breakfast supplies! Open 8-6pm on weekdays and 10-6pm on the week-end (including on Sunday).

In the same building as Corvintetö! On the very top floor of a former famous communist department store. That's where you'll find the really Hungarian underground! Artists, activists meet here for theater plays, concerts, debates or just good coffees (but no food). Closes quite early. CLOSED for the moment... One of the coolest alternative spaces in Budapest. DIY made, community-based, activist hotbed, nice gigs (live klezmer, world music, parties of all kind) and bar all weekdays.

All right, this place (10min fron the house) has become a Budapest symbol. It's a ruin bar set in a beautiful but crumbling house of the Jewish district. Bohemian atmosphere and LOADS of foreigners (it became touristy in the past few years). For a more local feeeling go there to shop at their very nice farmers' market on Sunday from 9 till 2pm.

Authentic local Hungarian market-hall! Not as touristy as the Big Central market hall (not far from here), lower key but built at the same time and in a similar fashion. In the morning small producers get to sell their own veggies, honey, eggs, paprika... Mon: 6am-6pm, Tuesday-Friday 6am-6pm, Sat 6am-1pm
