Rijsel is the result of a passion for the French kitchen and an attempt to catch the lightheartedness of Flanders. “Rijsel” is the Flemish name for the industrial city that the French refer to as “Lille”. It is not the sort of hip and modern city you would expect a restaurant to be named after. Sometimes a name is just that, sometimes there’s much more to it. Rijsel is more than just a name. In a classic meets ‘60s interior with a modern industrial feel they serve no-nonsense food for a fair price. The relaxed atmosphere allows you to enjoy yourself, whatever mood you’re in or celebration has brought you to us.

Sustainable place. Café de Ceuvel has been founded by people that would like to make a difference in the world. The world food system is one of the biggest causes of climate change and many other social problems in the world. That’s why we are on a quest for truly good food and drinks. This goes further than a label that says ‘organic’. They are coöperating with a large amount of initiatives that make sure that every plate, beer or drink that we serve make a positive impact somewhere else. For instance, they are making our own soda’s , they are growing their vegetables together with Mijn Stadstuin in Amsterdam-West and their bitterballs are made of mushrooms that grow on coffee grinds.

The village of Durgerdam with its listed buildings lies on the Waterlandse Zeedijk (dyke). The dyke was raised by the labour of farmers using spades in the 13th century. Before the sand banks in the Zuiderzee (sea) expanded and the Afsluitdijk (dyke) cut off this maritime channel forever, Durgerdam was an important harbour on the Zuiderzee. A number of well known captains came from here. After the decline of the Dutch merchant navy, the inhabitants lived mostly of fishing, and in particular, herring fishing. Every Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm, rain or shine, there is the Noordermarkt ready to sell fresh organic vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, mushrooms, herbs, meat, fish, honey, flowers and other delicious foods. On the other side of the square you will find the antique market and the best apple pie in Amsterdam can be tasted at the nearby Winkel cafe along with other great restaurants in the area.
