Parks & Nature

My absolute favorite place in the Smoky Mountain National Park. This is a great place to see wildlife while viewing cabins built in the 1800's as well as an old mill that still grinds corn for cornmeal. There are many hiking trails and you can bike the 11 miles loop early on Saturday.

Inspired by Austrian-style tea houses, lunch at The Wild Plum restaurant and tea room is a must for any visit to Gatlinburg, TN. Located in the historic Arts & Craft Community, they offer fresh home-made and delicious food unlike any other restaurant in Gatlinburg. Reservations are encouraged but must be made 24 hours in advance. Reservations not accepted during October. The Chef’s Special is Lobster Pie and if you want to make sure it has not sold out before your arrival time, reserve one when you make your reservation. Of their homemade desserts, I’m particularly fond of their bread pudding. Expect to pay a little more but everything is made there and worth the treat. Angus beef is its specialty but they offer seafood and chicken dishes. If you are hungry for a good steak, I would choose this over Outback and Texas Roadhouse. They also have a location in Pigeon Forge on the Parkway.

This restaurant recently opened in Pigeon Forge in a shopping area called The Islands. A store is located on the street level featuring Paula’s cookware, recipe books and many other items. The restaurant is upstairs. Meals are served country style, Breakfast is $14.95, Lunch is $16.95 and Dinner is $21.95. Depending on when you dine, your party selects from 2-3 meat selections and 4 sides. Drinks are extra except I think orange juice comes with breakfast. Dishes are replenished if you run out of something. I read some of the reviews after I ate there with my mother and some seemed harsh although the overall rating was 4 stars. For our meal we ordered lasagna, pork chops, poppy seed salad, squash casserole, corn casserole and mac and cheese. The lasagna was the best I have ever had out as was the mac & cheese. The other dishes were also very tasty and with your meal you received dessert and bread. They do not have any carry out containers which I felt was a shame because I ate so much it was hard to enjoy my banana pudding (excellent). You would think they would at least offer your dessert to go. It does seem wasteful seeing many bowls with food carted back to the kitchen to be disposed of. Even though the price was steep in comparison to other places to choose from, I can’t wait to go back and sneak in a few to go containers. Even at 3 in the afternoon, there were not many tables empty. Opens at 8 a.m.

Just follow directions to Gatlinburg from the map in this binder. The map will take you into Gatlinburg on US 321 and you will pass the restaurant on the right. It’s near a curve so be careful not to drive past it. The restaurant only serves breakfast & lunch and closes at 3 pm. Breakfast is served any time and it’s great. www.tripadvisor.com ranked it #9 out of 176 restaurants in Gatlinburg. Maybe closed on Tuesday during the winter season.
