If you want to kayak down the Thames, this is a good bet. Dolphin teaches kayaking, canoe and paddle board class, with easy riverside parking right there. We spend a lot of time swimming and paddle boarding down the Thames, though I possibly wouldn't recommend full submersion in this waterway after heavy rain (agricultural run off and sewage both a possibility).

My children are a bit too old for this sweet petting zoo, but I've heard only good things, from parents with children aged 3-10.

RIVER SPOTS Park next to St Bartholomew Church, Lower Basildon, and take footpath to river, where you will find gentle beach-style entrance to river beside a meadow. Delightful swimming spot for young children.

If you think paddle boarding might be your thing, head to one of our top launch pads in South Stoke. To find the river lane, drive into the village, pass the pub on your right, ignore the right hand lane that takes you back up to B-road and stick to lanes heading left until you reach a single track heading for the river. You can park here, and launch paddle boards/lilos etc. Across the river is the Beetle & Wedge, which serves ice creams by the scoop. Down river towards Wallingford is a riverside shop on the other side, selling Calippos and Cornettos. This is literally the world’s best day trip for kids.

Again, one for the younger children, but we hear nothing but rave reviews about this park. Kids can catch a train out to feed the deer in the park, bounce on a big pillow and cool down in the fountain splash zone.

This has become the go-to end of summer term party spot for all the local kids, and with good reason. A large lake-side inflatable playground, a beach with sun loungers for hire, a launch pad for paddle boards and wild swimmers, plus burger stalls, coffee stands and Ibiza-styled white lounge bar; all eventualities are covered at the lakes. You could spend a lot of time here with your children, but be warned, kids under 10 need adults to accompany them in the water, which might mean you getting wet too...

No adult loves a trampoline park, but if you're feeling very kind, you could take your children to Red Kangaroo. Loud music, underheated seating area, average coffee... but your kids will have the best time ever, if they love to bounce.
