This is the place to go if you want to go to Mt. Rainier. Best time to go is July through August. There are plenty of hikes in the surrounding area. It's a 3 hour drive, so take food and water. There's an entrance fee.

If you're looking for a tough hike, this is it. Ask for the "old trail", which is steeper but shorter. You don't need a pass if you park on the street, but you'll need a pass if you park in the parking lot (passed the gate). Most people park on the street and walk up to the trail head. It's a very short walk.

Sightseeing

Seattle's iconic market. A little expensive, but there are plenty of things to sample. I recommend trying the smoked salmon from the fish markets, the cheese at Beechers and the jams from the stores that sell jams and jelly.

You can reach Vashon by ferry from Fauntleroy in West Seattle. It's only good if you drive or go by bike (you'd need to be in good shape). The downtown is quaint. There are a lot of parks and open spaces and on a beautiful day it makes for a great bike ride.
