City/town information

A 20-minute drive northwards from La Chablisienne brings you the historic township of New Norfolk. Established in 1807 New Norfolk is the major population and business Centre in the Derwent Valley. It’s the ideal destination for those with an interest in antiques and collectables, having a number of well-stocked shops and vendors. Every Saturday from 8am to 2pm the Banjos New Norfolk market is held along High Street with an average of 75 stall holders. Being an enthusiastic attendee of markets across Tasmania myself, it is my favourite market and I highly recommend taking a look.

Around 4km to the east of La Chablisienne at 35 Main Road Claremont, you will find Claremont Plaza, for Woolworths Supermarket and a variety of other retailers. Claremont became a locality in 1960 and is named after Claremont House, which was built in the 1830s by local settler from England, Henry Bilton. Claremont is also home to an actively producing Cadburys Chocolate Factory founded in 1922. Cadbury's Claremont has a rich history with 18 heritage listed buildings on the site. The factory still features pure granite "conching" machines which are over 60 years old but are still in use. Due to its long history, and the general appeal of chocolate, the factory was a major Tasmanian tourism attraction for families until its on-site visitor centre closed in 2015.
