Designed by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović in the 1930s, it was originally used as an exhibition pavilion before being turned into a mosque during World War II – complete with the addition of minarets. After the war the minarets were dismantled and the building returned to its original function, although it is still referred to fondly as “the Mosque” by the locals.
