Traveler advice

Getting around

Travel from Airbnb to Beach

Drive or take a long walk down our steep street around the flat shoreline road. Beach access is at the resorts along this road - The Meridian (food/bar with shallow rocky beach) - Grand Roatan (food, snorkeling, diving, sandy beach) - Infinity (food/bar,snorkeling, sandy beach, diving, music, buffet above main, gift shop, coffee bar in lobby) Pass Infinity and you’ll come to Paradise Alley road and walkway. It leads to - Banarama Resort and - Paradise Resort. Both have food/bar, diving, snorkeling and activity booking. From any of these access points you can walk the west bay beachfront.
Getting around

Minimart and Shops

On the main road in West Bay there is a minimart called Mangiamos. They sell limited groceries and it is a deli/restaurant. - Captain Vans is next door and they have liquor, juice, phone accessories as well as data and minute cards. They rent scooters. - This mall has other gift shops too. - Many other gift shops and cafes are located down Paradise Alley in the village shops.
Getting around

ATM

There are 2 ATMs nearby. One is located in the main lobby of Infinity Bay Resort. The other is in west bay mall next to Capitan Vans. Neither one will give US dollars, only Honduras Limps even though it offers dollars on the screen. Each 500L bill is around $20.
Getting around

Urgent Care and Pharmacy

An urgent care is located in west bay mall next to Capitan Vans. Frosted glass doors. Usually an ambulance is parked in front. Costs are low for treatment but payment is needed in advance. They can also provide transportation to the hospital for X-rays or tests if needed. — A pharmacy is located in Paradise Alley. No prescription is needed for various items such as pain meds and antibiotics. The pharmacist can also give advise for a variety of ailments/injuries.

Tipping

Tipping is huge here. Many tour guides and grocery assistants only work for tips and for others, hourly wages are low. Locals depend on tips. Locals are generous and helpful. Show them lots of love....
Customs and culture

Driving

Roads are mostly paved but some areas still only have dirt roads. Potholes are common. Flooding is occasional. Taxis and buses stop in the road since there are no street pull off areas or shoulders. Watch for stopped vehicles. Taxis and locals pass slow vehicles often and use a friendly beep beep. Locals ride scooters and motorcycles and they also pass often. It’s hard to get lost as there is just one road from end to end of the island. Coxen Hole has a few side streets that all loop back to the main road.
What to pack

Outlets, Rain, Misc

*Outlets are the same as USA and Canada so special adapters aren’t needed. *It rains here so pack an umbrella. * For a lot of walking, you’ll want to have more than flip flops or sandals. Our street is steep, has a dirt section and the shortcut has some jungle.
Don't miss

Water Taxi

It’s a good way to get to West End plus it’s a great view of the island from the water. $3 per person $1 tip. Daytime is best 9am - 5pm. Get on water taxi to come back by 5pm to avoid darkness. Many boats don’t have lights.
Customs and culture

The Reef

The coral reef here (Mesoamerican) is the second largest in the world to the Great Barrier Reef. Roatan is in a marine preservation protected area. The reef is a living organism and not dead rock as some think. Please avoid littering, do not touch anything in the water or take anything out of the sea. As we say, take photos and leave bubbles.
Ways to save

Cook and Eat in Airbnb

With a full size frig, bbq, microwave and stovetop you save money by cooking at home. For beach access resorts that line the beach will want you to buy something. Save your money for cocktails or appetizers to maximize your beach experience. We can escort you to the local grocery store, Eldons.
