It is one of the best little museums I have been to. A lot of the things are donated from people in the area and it gives you a real feel for the way life was in our little neck-of-the -woods. It is a must see.

Appanoose County Historical & Coal Mining Museum

Replica mines, mining exhibits and a mining video in basement level. Also features local history, including military, textiles and fine arts. Housed in 1903 post office.

Bobwhite State Park

Lovely park with walking trail and swim area. You are almost guaranteed to see deer and other wild life. It is great for kayaking, walking, swimming or just enjoying a picnic at the park.

Honey Creek State Park

Visitors to Honey Creek State Park return often to enjoy the beautiful setting of 828 acres of rolling, timbered hills against a background of beautiful Rathbun Lake, Iowa's largest lake. In 1954, Congress authorized the construction of Rathbun Lake because the Chariton River Valley, in south central Iowa, was susceptible to flood and drought problems. The dam was completed in 1969 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Rathbun Lake provides flood protection for 149,300 acres of land along the Chariton River. In addition to Honey Creek State Park, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources manages the Rathbun Fish Hatchery and Fisheries Research Facility located below the dam.

With its red and white awning, high tin ceiling and original wood floors, it has been an integral part of southern Iowa history and a purveyor of high-quality merchandise for many decades now." -- Pipers
