  • Six of five stars! This really is a small place of paradise. Jacques and Justin have an eye for detail and make you feel welcomed right away. They have beautiful ideas to built an unique home. We had a really relaxing and peaceful time. Also the food in their restaurant is delicious and the garden is beautiful for reading on the couch while the sound of crickets and birds surrounds you. Jacques has a lovely personality and has always time for a nice chat telling you about his country and precious village. We can just recommend staying in this lovely and idyllic place and will definitely come back anytime we’re visiting South Africa again :-)

ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES Nieu Bethesda is a pretty and authentic Karoo village situated in a beautiful valley in the Eastern Cape, about an hour's drive from the town of Graaff Reinet. It was founded in the mid nineteenth century and the village has many wonderful country homes which exemplify the Victorian architecture of this period. The village provides a wonderful venue for a Karoo holiday. There are good walks (Compassberg, the highest free standing peak in the Eastern Cape at 2502m), a great variety of bird life for the bird-watching enthusiast, an artistic and relaxed atmosphere for those who want to unwind and enjoy the creativity and tranquillity of the place, and lots of choice from where to eat and what to do. And of course the village is famous for being the home of outsider artist Helen Martins who created the Owl House. A visit to the Owl House is almost obligatory for visitors to Nieu Bethesda. The Owl House inspired the well-known writer, Athol Fugard to write the play (now also a film), The Road to Mecca. Nieu Bethesda also has a fascinating fossil museum and the valley is rich in pre-mammalian fossils, older than the dinosaurs; visitors can sign up for a tour of the fossil wealth of the area. Then there is the opportunity to visit a nearby farm and view the San rock art, the pre-mammalian fossil beds, wool shed, and Boer War engravings. Jacob's Donkey Cart Tours provides an excursion around the village with an entertaining commentary, and a visit to Sneeuberg Trading to meet the local brewer and cheese maker and sample his excellent produce is another treat. DAY TOURS Graaff-Reinet is a centre of Karoo culture and history featuring National Monuments, and several significant museums and art galleries, including the Pierneef Exhibition. Also nearby are the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo National Park and the scenic Mountain Zebra National Park which protects one of the world's rarest land mammals.

It is just where you want to cone home to after exploring Nieu Bethesda ... especially on those hot days! The garden is shaded and has a host of beautiful bird life. In among the old-fashioned quaintness of Nieu Bethesda, this was an oasis of pristinely kept rooms and gardens. Definitely recommended to anyone passing through.

A 100 year old wild mulberry tree and an old well guard this century year old cottage, nestled amongst other historical gems, in an oasis in the karoo, at the foot of the majestic Sneeu and Compassberg mountains. A natural spring and lei-water (furrow) system supply residents with crisp water, and provide the kind of soil perfect for roses, pear trees and weeping willows to thrive. It is a desert rose amongst the aloes of Graaff Reinet and Middleberg, each 50km away.
Compass view is big enough for 6, but cosy enough for 2, or 1, if you're on a creative quest. Insulated by original mud brick walls, it's cozy in winter and cool in summer, with a little help from a fan and a fireplace. Beautiful old trees provide lots of shade in the garden, and a big bbq area which is great for socializing and stargazing. Popular activities include snoozing, reading, painting, writing, meditating, dreaming, boardgames, and general well being, among other things.
Compass view, being situated right in town, is safe and within walking distance to ... everything! Including the Pub, Karoo Lamb, The Owl House, The Ibis Lounge, Two Goats Brewery, The Kitchener Fossil Exploration Centre, Dust Covers Bookshop, The Stoep BnB, Die Waenhuis and lots of other curious and wonderful spots (some of them world famous!)

Dale and Marianka were great and very friendly hosts. We would thoroughly recommend this AirB&B to anyone traveling to Nieu-Bethesda!!

  • Our stay at Stone heaven was fantastic! Our Hosts were gracious and very friendly. They even bought a fan after our first night due to the early spring heat. The inside was beautifully done and was neat and clean. The best of all was that all the knives in the kitchen were sharp. We really enjoyed our time there and will recommend it to anybody. Thank you Dale and Marianka, we would love to see you again you are truly an amazing couple.

  • The Pond House is a truly restful place to stay, and a good base for seeing Nieu-Bethesda. Due to the drought and hot weather there was no water to swim in, but the farm is a quiet and scenic place for walks, sitting in the shade, and bird watching. The dirt and gravel road from Nieu-Bethesda was easily navigable for our Volvo sedan.

Klein Geluk [ Little Happiness ] is a very special 140 year house. A haven for travelers that seek stillness, healing energy and purpose. The clay built walls are white washed, the shutters are painted the color of the sky at sunset. The once barren garden now has a lawn, fruit trees and many roses. The dam is filled with borehole water and I love to take a dip at sunset. At night the stars are so close that you wish you could pick them and keep them as a keepsake of the magical space.
ONE bathroom only. Please note the second bedroom is for one extra person, preferably a child. The third person/ child, will share the only bathroom. The bathroom leads directly from the main bedroom. The bathroom also has access from the dining room. The second single room is next to the kitchen, accessible from the dining room.
E We are in Pienaar Street on the quiet side of town, no streetlights and very quiet except for the cars that use Pienaar Street to go to town, we are 400m from the centre of town
  • A very calm home. Beautifully styled, a comfortable bed and a small but fabulously equipped kitchen. The garden is heaven with scented roses, outdoor seating areas and a dam to swim in. The bathroom is at the centre of the home and would suit sharing with a close family member. We had a fabulous evening here, will recommend to friends and will certainly return. Highly recommend!

  • Klein Geluk will exceed your expectations! Neil is a great host and we felt very welcomed by his personal touches. The garden is magnificent and there’s a lovely dam on the property. The kitchen has everything you need (and more) and the house was spotless. The house is decorated beautifully and the bedding and towels were of good quality. The bathroom only has a bath. • Beautiful home , tastefully decorated. The space is really lovely with a comfortable sitting room and great indoor dining table - fabulous outside dining and a lovely shady spot to sit and look at the garden. Wow what a garden..., full of flowers truly magnificent! All in all a great find in Nieu Bethesda. The only downside is there is no shower and sadly we were unable to swim in the pool / Dam which would have been a welcome respite from the hot summers day. But having said that we appreciated the beautiful space Neil has created. Lots of beautiful touches !

    Sarah2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • What a gem of a place! I could have lived in the beautiful garden forever! The house is so tastefully and artfully furnished, is super clean and the bed was very very comfy and I am extremely fussy! Loved the extra touches that our host did to make us even more comfortable! We will def be back!

The Stoep is situated in the heart of Nieu Bethesda, a stone throw away from the Owl House, in the tourist square. The property is surrounded by lei-water, a special feature still in Nieu Bethesda. The house is over 120 years old, and has a gift of a garden as well as a wrap around stoep for chilling and star gazing. The rooms are ensuite with separate entrances. Throughout the house there is a flow of ecclectic artistic, vintage decor.
The Stoep is home to some well known artworks from local artists exhibiting throughout the year, some of their art is available to purchase.
Nieu Bethesda is a village like no other. Remote and romantic, where time stands still. Special features include wild horses and donkeys walking the streets, the famous owl house and kitching fossil center. These, together with a selection of galleries and art studios and eateries create an atmosphere perfect for unwinding and destressing.

Enjoy our Karoo home in the heart of Nieu-Bethesda, a magical town where getting a little lost is encouraged. The well-equipped main-house has 3 charming bedrooms and a big cosy living room with a wood-burning oven, essential for chilly Karoo Winters. The kitchen, with its 10-seater table, is perfect for cooking family feasts and entertaining. The snug cottage sleeps 3 and has all essentials. It's a regular retreat for artists and we're slowly filling the walls the art inspired by Nieu-Bethesda.
The house is surrounded by a secure perimeter wall, and also allows for ample parking. The high ceilings are ideal for cooling your Summer days and the electric blankets and fireplace offer warmth in the chilly Winters, when snow can surprise you.
The house is centrally located. Nieu-Bethesda is a small, basic, beautiful town with wonderful attractions, but it’s important to note just how basic it is. There is no petrol station, ATM, Supermarket (apart from the Corner Store that provides the basics) or Liquor Store in the town. Please be sure to fill up on gas and gather supplies in Graaf-Reniet (52km away) or another neighbouring town before arriving. Everything is walking distance and we encourage getting a little lost.

Nieu- Bethesda, today is a peaceful village which attracts artists an intellectuals who live or holiday in this mountain- retreat where in spring the pear-tree avenue makes a golden highway. The flourishing farming community patronises the Civic Centre every Saturday and the four tennis courts, badminton court and bowling green are in great demand. The OWL HOUSE is at present the main attraction. The town has also a Police station, a Post Office, shops, restaurants, a lovely church, bridges and a watermill.
  • We spent two pleasant nights in this big and beautiful house. Everything is clean and it is very well equipped, you have a terrace in the sun. You are close to the village center. Someone is available if you need something. We used the fireplace, essential because in August this old house is really very cold (you also have radiators in the rooms). We recommend !

  • I have stayed in Nieu Bethesda many times. Always taking care to book the most luxurious options. I noticed the new Guest House, The Bethesda and decided to give it a go. It is the best Guest House I have ever stayed in, in Nieu Bethesda! From making the booking, Carla was prompt to reply and provided all the info we needed. On arrival, we were met with refresher towels and a welcome drink. The room was super luxurious and worth spending the extra money. There was Africology shower gel, shampoo, lotion etc. There were face clothes including a separate face cloth for make-up removal, mini bar, white pristine linen, mosquito net (a must in Nieu Bethesda) and white fluffy towels. The décor is super stylish and every detail has been taken care of. Breakfast was delicious and served with a smile, again, silver cutlery, beautiful bowls and jars for preserves and condiments, white material serviettes and every detail superb. On our return late in the afternoon, we were served a delicious home made cake on the patio with our tea. There are book cases with books to read and interesting literature about the area. In the evening we dined at Bruno’s, a very short stroll away. We took our complimentary bottle of wine we received in our room and were not charged corkage. If you have not booked at The Bethesda, at the very least – don’t miss dinner here. When we left, we packed our complimentary soft drinks from our mini bar for our road trip back, which was a life saver in the heat. If you like the finer things in life and enjoy efficient and friendly service then The Bethesda, is definitely the place to book! We are never staying anywhere else again!

  • My stay at Ganora was wonderful! It's a typical Karoo sheep farm with stunning views and a lot of quietness. My room was all I could ever ask for with tea and coffee facilities and a nice stone shower. Comfortable beds and everything was 100 % clean. Having breakfast in the beautiful dining room was my favourite part of the day but also the dinner you can book is just delicious - we were served lamb chops from the farm and they regularly do a typical braai. If you want to go out for dinner or lunch, there are quite a lot of restaurants in Nieu-Bethesda, a cute little Karoo town. There are great hiking trails starting from the farm and Ganora also offers various activities such as the fossil walk (they also have their own fossil museum) or the medicinal plant walk that can be booked additionally. The hosts were so welcoming and nice that I felt like leaving home on my departure. I will definitely come back to this lovely place!

  • Fantastic. The Shepherd's Cottage might be rustic but was well appointed and suited to my purposes, which was a quiet time to do some studies while exploring. There is no cell phone reception but there is a good working WiFi to stay in contact. There is good MTB riding experience or just go for a walk but remember no WiFi away from the cottage. I recommend at least a few days stay to properly appreciate the time there.

  • The Rest is a unique and incredible place. There is such a sense of freedom and safety and Paula was a phenomenal host. A wonderful place to get away from normal life and explore the true beauty of the Karoo. Highlights for us included climbing the mountain for sunrise after a snowfall and enjoying hearty meals made with grass fed beef grown right there on the farm. Don’t miss out on that, or a loaf of home made bread!

  • What an amazing place! I thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Rest. I cannot wait to go back. If you want peace, quiet and solitude, this is the place for you. Walking in the mountains with not a soul in sight. It was pure adventure.

  • Amazing experience if you are looking for something different + a real family feel from the hosts + stars for Africa.

  • Staying at Paula's was one of the best ideas we had for our trip. The location is beautiful, and a great change from all tourist Hotspots. Paula is an amazing host. This might have been the first time I stayed with her, but definitely not the last.

  • The most beautiful home, in the most picturesque location, so much so than we imagined! Plenty of space, enviable furniture and every amenity you could think of, there is no better place to relax, unwind and use as a base to take a slow explore around the Karoo

  • We love the Karoo and this is a very special farm with an incredible history of people and paleontology. It was a privilege staying at Trymore. The house is comfortable and the the staff kind and helpful. We had a wonderful braai under the Karoo night sky. Thank-you to Marion and to Richard who gave us a great tour of the fossils.

  • A wonderful place to stay, in an area with many out-of-the ordinary attractions. Marion welcomed us warmly with tea and biscuits and a visit to the family fossil museum, which must not be missed. (You can read about it in The Plains of Camdeboo, by Eve Palmer.) The cottage has been beautifully renovated, but retains its old-fashioned charm, including an open log fire on a cold evening, and several informative books to read through or buy. Though it was lovely for two people, there is space for a family. The delicious dinner of real farm produce is also a must, and excellent value as well.

  • Outstanding value for money - one of the few cases when reality trumps expectations. From arrival to departure, every aspect is taken care of !

  • Fantastic place

    Darryl2017-12-17T00:00:00Z
  • The spacious farm cottage is beautifully decorated, with crisp linen and mohair blankets on the beds, and freshly cut flowers throughout. We had a delicious Venison Pie for dinner, and enjoyed a quiet evening in front of the fire in the comfortable living room. Marion was a friendly, inviting host, who took us to see the world-renowned fossils in the museum on the farm. Wow!
