Places to stay in Houghton County
Located on Portage Lake in Chassell, MI, near Houghton with quick access to Michigan Tech University, this rustic family cabin is a great place for either an overnight stay or a longer getaway. It provides a great home base for travel in the Keweenaw peninsula! As a 1930s cabin with a sauna on the lake along with a great view, the focus is on the experience! We find guests who truly enjoy our place are flexible with rustic conditions (not looking for Holiday Inn Express) and young at heart!
Along with the house of the owner, this is the only cabin on this property. Guests have access to the sauna on the lake and the shower in the owner's house in order to bathe. The cabin which has only cold water includes a kitchen (with a refrigerator, cooking surface, convection oven, microwave oven, griddle, coffee and hot pot) as well as a toilet.
The cabin is located on Portage Lake in a quiet neighborhood with a rails-to-trails path right across the road that is great for walking, running or biking. A township park is located on the lake 3/4 of a mile to the south. The Michigan Technological University campus is located 6 miles to the north and west on US 41. Downtown Houghton (where the dock for the Ranger to Isle Royale is located) is one mile farther where you will find numerous dining options and an outstanding brewery.
  • Gorgeous view! A dip in the lake and then a sauna is a must.

  • I'm not sure anyone could be finer hosts than Keith and Julie. We experienced a truly outstanding UP trip and staying at this place was a highlight. Watched the World Series Game One with Keith. Got the sauna up to 185 degrees. Chicken soup was perfect. Onya Keith and Julie!

  • Keith and Julie were around to help out with anything that was needed, always there for a helping hand :) beautiful little yard with a beautiful view of the stars at night and sunrise in the morning. Thanks guys!

  • Great house! We spent a wonderful night in Keith & Julie house. The house is located just beside a beautiful lake where you can appreciate the sunrise and sunset. The house is very clean and warm, we all have a good sleep. What's more, I really impressed by Keith & Julie's hospitality, we had a great talk which allows me to learn more about the north michigan. Extremely Recommended!

  • Keith and Julie are amazing hosts and their cabin was perfect for our stay. We had a long drive up from Chicago and arrived quite late. Keith and Julie were very understanding, and even had the sauna heated for us upon arrival. The sunrise from the deck the next morning was absolutely breathtaking. We had planned to continue up to Copper Harbor, and Keith and Julie shared their favorite spots to stop along the way and gave us a map. We couldn't have asked for a better way to start our first trip visiting the UP!

    Amanda2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Julie and Keith are fantastic hosts with very warm and friendly hospitality. The setting was amazing, a quaint and rustic cabin on the lake. Although there is no bathroom in the cabin, they were very inviting about using the guest bathroom in the main house. We wish we could have taken advantage of both the vintage, wood-fired sauna and the incredible hiking trails near by, but it just will encourage us to come back and visit sometime. We loved our stay!

  • This was a great place to stay. Although the weather didn’t cooperate for sitting on the deck we still enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful year round beach house. This tiny house is located on Second Sand Beach. Guests will enjoy an all sand beach on Lake Superior. It is 8 miles from the town of L’Anse, and a 40 minute drive to Houghton. Cross country ski trails, snowmobile trails, hiking trails, and ORV trails are minutes away. Participate in the many summer and winter fishing tournaments in the area or relax and unwind on the private beach. A boat launch area is a short walk down the beach.
  • Very clean and cozy. The views are lovely. The description and photos are accurate. It served our purposes well. You’re in a very historic area and it was fun to explore♥️

    Lisa2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Loved our stay at the tiny house! It has everything you could need for a getaway. We had a fire on the beach, the sunrise was amazing, the fall colors were breathtaking. Had some great margaritas at Skippers (local bar in L’Anse) and took a day drive up to Copper harbor - HIGHLY recommend going to Fitzgerald’s in Eagle River - might have been the best meal I’ve ever had (probably want to make a reservation though). Their puppers were funny and entertaining. Our stay was absolutely magical. This space and location was perfect for us and I can’t wait to visit again!

  • We had no idea going in, what to expect out of our week spent at the tiny house. Even with that said, it far surpassed anything we could have imagined. It was an amazing week. The weather wasn't the best, but that's Lake Superior in mid-October for you. We greatly overpacked, as the tiny house had most everything you could possibly need. The sunrises in the morning were spectacular. The waves at night with the windows open, lulled us to sleep. We had a couple great nights by our fire on the beach and watching the moon come up. Such a very special week, surrounded by the beautiful Lake. Gloria and Gary were amazing hosts. Very quick responses to any and all questions. Even though their house is right behind the tiny house, it felt totally private. We got to meet and pet their dogs, which helped us get our animal fix in for the week, as we missed ours. Gloria worked with us on a little later checkout as we didn't want to leave, we loved it so much! A word to future guests, that the pictures are accurate. It is a tiny house. Approximately 10' x 20' You will be cozy, but for a couple looking to spend some quality time it was perfect. We can't thank Gloria and Gary enough, and will come back anytime as long as they will have us.

  • Very cute, clean, and cozy. Has everything you might need for your stay.

    Lori2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Beach House was exactly what we were hoping for!!! It was quiet and secluded with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. The house is very well appointed with cooking utensils, pots and pans, wine glasses, beer glasses, water glasses- you name it. Yes, it’s a small space, but for two people who wanted to spend a cozy week together, it was just perfect, and the space is well used so everything is functional- I just adored the bathroom! Cannot say enough nice things about this place, or about Gloria and Gary, the hosts, both of whom were terrific. If you’re a dog person, ask to meet their dogs- they are fun and sweet as can be!

    Katie2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay here was great! It was a perfect getaway and being able to have a campfire on the beach was amazing! We plan on returning in the near future.

    Ashley2019-09-07T00:00:00Z
  • We had a perfect weekend at the Tiny House. The home has everything you could need packed into a small space. While we were near other homes, it was so quiet and peaceful. During the day we explored some trails that were close by. In the evening we came back and enjoyed dinner on the grill right by the water. We loved falling asleep each night to the sound of the waves.

Nice, clean apartment just 5 minutes from Michigan Tech and a view of Portage Lake (lake access too!). One stall of garage parking available so you can go right from car to apartment without dealing with the snow. The driveway is plowed. Wifi, heat, keurig coffee selection included. Washer and dryer are in the spacious bathroom with a shower. Full kitchen and electric fireplace. Handicap accessible with stairlift from garage. Full sized bed with additional pullout couch.
Close to MTU, MTU CC ski trails, Nara ski trails, Chassell Ski trails, Mont Ripley, many miles of snowmobile trails and right on Portage Lake. No matter the season, a great place to stay to enjoy outdoor recreation, or visit family, or just get away from it all.
  • This was a quaint one bedroom with an over sized bathroom. It was convenient to all local areas. The place was very clean and all amenities were as listed and excellent. Would highly recommend.

    Deb2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • Couldn't be happier with our stay. Super clean with plenty of amenities to make our stay comfortable. We loved playing games at the dining table while looking out over the lake. Being able to park our vehicle in the garage was a huge bonus we weren't expecting. Would definitely stay here again when we are in the area.

  • Great place to stay

    Jim2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • Pictures are true to what the space is like. It is a very comfortable space and close to Michigan Tech activities. Lynette was a very accommodating host.

  • Great location for cross country skiing

    Gary2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lynette was a great host! I sent my husband & son on a guys snowmobile trip and they had a great time. They report that the cabin was clean and cozy, and the thing they loved the most was the donuts Lynette left out for them. Lol! Also, my husband loves the garage space as he was driving an older car that didn't like to start in the cold - no problems with his car because of the garage space.

    Lindsy2020-01-28T00:00:00Z
  • This was a favorite, in my many Air BnB’s that I’ve stayed in, due to the comfy atmosphere, and the fact that I could use this space, like my own home for work and rest.

    Lisa2020-01-18T00:00:00Z
  • This cute place has everything that a person may need, except your own food. The pots/ pans, are high quality. Spices, hot chocolate, coffees are included. It’s kept very well plowed. It’s a 1 bedroom with a nice sized closet, plus a large bathroom. I will def. be staying here again.

Beautiful sunsets and crashing waves on a remote beach - without 'roughing it!' Heated floors and fireplace will keep you toasty while you watch the Big Lake through a wall of glass. Full kitchen with cherry and granite so you don't have to leave.
Elegantly trimmed wilderness home with full amenities. Queen bed with two-sided fireplace serving bedroom and dining area. Unique black ash cathedral ceiling. In-floor radiant heat for ultimate comfort. Washer, dryer, and walk-in closet. It doesn't get cozier than this!
Walk the secluded beach for miles and be completely alone while you pick Lake Superior agates. One mile hike to 7 Mile Point Nature Conservancy. Snowmobile trail access 5 minutes away in Eagle River. Snowmobile trailer and sled parking available with heated shop in case your gear requires a little wrenching. Extensive hiking/snowshoeing wilderness trails right at your doorstep.
  • The location itself is secluded, but you are staying on the host’s property with their house right next to you. It was still private and completely separate, but like other reviews stated a little surprising. Other than that it was amazing. Top notch inside and out. Everything was there from pots and pans to tv and DVD player. Even an electric can opener. The unit itself was gorgeous and clean. Perfect place for a couple to get away in the Keweenaw.

    Thomas2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Great place right on the lake, super secluded. The owner's home is right next to it but still felt like we were in our own little world. Perfect escape for a mental reset.

    Benjamin2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • I booked this place without looking at how far it was, come to find out it was a 12 hour drive! Every second of that 13 hours was worth it for this destination! It is absolutely stunning; sitting right on the edge of the lake and you can hear the waves in the cabin. If you're looking for a beautiful, private, secluded get away.. this place is it and do much more!

    Kaley2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Everything about this place was top of the line. The finishes, the appliances, the amenities, the furniture, the scenery, the location, and the host. This place has everything you need, and everything you didn't know you needed.

    Casey2019-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • This is by far the best Airbnb I have stayed in. My husband and I got to spend our one year anniversary admiring Michigan’s U.P. Fall colors and lakeshore. They gave us our space and the hospitality was great as there was parking, a cute welcome pumpkin, pitcher of cold water, brochures/books about the area etc. Brad’s place offered a fully functional and stocked home with all the essentials (salt/pepper/olive oil/lotion/shampoo/hair dryer etc). We were able to slow down and felt cozy and right at home in the space. We spent our evenings watching the sunset with wine in hand. Thank you so much for a glorious stay, we will be back!

    Rachel2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful place to stay, highly recommend it. It is right next to the owners house which we didn't expect but turned out just fine. Still had the privacy we were looking for. Beach is gorgeous.Everything you could need is available, really was perfect!

    Kristen2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful space and location. Quiet, relaxing. Off the beaten trail but close enough to food and other activities. Our second stay. Winter was beautiful up here. Fall is amazing as well. We will be back.

  • It was wonderful! Cozy cabin feel with the amenities you really need. I brought the food/spices we needed, but realized we'd forgotten coffee, which Clare had provided at the house. Communication is great, and she is super accommodating and helpful! Would definitely stay again!

There was so much room in the shed across the road to store our sleds in which was a great touch. The house was clean and very roomy. Loved the sauna. Would definitely stay here again

Welcome to our home away from home! You'll enjoy a three bedroom home that has been recently redone to give you a modern experience woven with the old time feel of the UP. You will be 10 miles from Houghton/Hancock and Michigan Tech but just three blocks from endless miles of trails for snowmobiles and atvs. There is also wifi, a smart TV, Netflix, your controlled heat, and a two car garage available. We welcome you!
As we mentioned the modern kitchen is a bright spot as the rest of the house has the old time style of wood floors along with original wood trim throughout the house. There is an unheated attic upstairs if you need extra room to move around as well.
There is a small downtown with a few restaurants and a few small stores. Luckily there is a grocery store just a couple of blocks away!

  • We needed a place to stay at the last minute (with our dog) and Adam responded immediately that we could stay with him. Our arrival time was very late at night but Adam still greeted us in person and had lights left on for us. If you are looking for a place to lay your head for the night, you can't go wrong staying here.

  • All was perfect! Cozy room with gas fireplace. Very comfortable bed - slept great. Bathroom nearby. Felt private. Reasonably priced. Close to the historic downtown with restaurants and shops. Easy walking distance if you don't mind a bit of a hill - but that is Houghton after all and what gives the canal views. Not far from MTU or outdoor activities. Family super nice!

  • I have stayed at many Airbnbs some fancy some not depending on what I am doing and length of stay. I was on a brief visit to Houghton to visit my daughter at MTU so just needed a simple place to crash for the night! Adam & his young family offer a nice size room with a very comfortable bed and a gas fireplace that keeps the room super cozy warm ( I was staying on one of the coldest nights this winter!). Very peaceful nights sleep which was what I was looking for. Perfect!

  • Great location close to the lighthouse and within an easy drive of other area points of interest, but Eagle Harbor provided some quiet solace right on Lake Superior. I appreciated all the tips and recommendations from Carol and Barry-communication with our hosts was excellent. The cabin was well stocked and worked perfectly for our needs. We really enjoyed our stay!

    Amy2019-09-22T00:00:00Z
  • The location of the cottage was perfect for our weekend. The space was cozy and was perfectly adequate for our trip, during which we spent much of the time out exploring. Amenities were fine and as described. There was an emergency with the water supply for the cottage, and Barry and Carol immediately attended to and fixed the problem; we were not affected at all. They were really wonderful hosts and we appreciated the local tips. We were glad to meet them and to have had the opportunity to be their guests!

Our hosts were kind, and we were provided with everything we needed during our stay. It was a perfect place to call home during our time in the upper peninsula!

  • This place is a quaint cabin-like space that allows you room to relax, refresh, and cook, but not be overwhelmed with a huge house. Easy driving distance from Copper Harbor and Eagle River. Gorgeous views of Lake Superior- be sure to check out the sunset at the overlook near the lighthouse. Overall, a wonderful place to be!

  • I don’t want to write this review because I don’t want others to find this little gem. We loved the house. It has everything we needed for our stay. The location is minutes from MTU and Houghton so we could visit our Husky. The snow was cleared and we could park the van in the garage (bonus)! Perfect amenities and a clean house. We were did not have the time to go down to the lake but, there was access if we were to here to do something on the lake like ice fishing. We will definitely be trying to stay here again if available. Thank you Lynette you are a great host.

This incredibly secluded cottage has it all - wifi, antiques, full kitchen, loft space - overlooking Keweenaw Bay and the Keweenaw Peninsula, right on Lake Superior. Amazing wildlife (deer, birds, more), stunning sunsets. Watch the stars come out and listen to the loons from the porch. Enjoy the wood-fired sauna (owner will get it going for you). The owner, Phil, lives on site, and can provide suggestions for local attractions. Short drive to convenient dining, groceries, attractions.
Master bedroom is open to the main room. Bath includes shower and laundry. Loft above has an additional bed. Full kitchen. Dining table with chairs, DVD player and TV (no reception), couch, lots of windows. VERY private and secluded. Hummingbird feeders, birds, flowers in the field (in season), swing on maple tree.
Secluded (nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away), but L'Anse Village is a short drive away, with a full grocery store, great restaurants. Point Abbaye, Mount Arvon (highest point in Michigan), Canyon River Falls, Pequaming, Keweenaw Peninsula (a jewel of the Upper Peninsula) are close by. Casino in Baraga. Houghton has wonderful restaurants and a Walmart. Nearby sand beach. Lots of historic sites and museums. The Aura Jamboree is not to be missed!
  • Beautiful cabin, very clean. Exactly what the pictures showed. Beautiful view & loved listening to the waves & watching the hummingbirds. Thanks Phil!!

  • What an amazing place to stay! The pictures don't give the cabin Justice. We loved using the sauna and sitting by the lake shore at night watching the sunset. Phil, was a very gracious host, and gave us great suggestions of things to do in the area. We hope to stay here in the future again. Thank you, Phil for opening your home to us!

    Jessica2019-08-30T00:00:00Z
  • Phil's lovely cabin exceeded my expectations. The secluded location made this a tranquil space to unwind and recharge.

    Isabel2019-08-28T00:00:00Z

Do it, if you're looking for any of the following: peace and quiet; great swimming in crystal clear Lake Superior; privacy; no neighbors; plenty of books, movies, and puzzles; clean well stocked kitchen; comfy beds; large, clean bathroom; hummingbirds!!; lots of skipping stones; wooden Adirondack chairs on the covered deck ... the perfect place to watch the sunset over the bay; falling asleep to the sound of waves.

    Nancy2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Breathtaking views, secluded, extra clean! Cozy and warm with everything we needed. Phil is a wonderful host and his cabin is modern and classic. A true up north experience. 10/10

Located on quiet dead-end street at the edge of the woods, with a view of Torch Lake. Comfortable, cheerful and private, it’s about a 15-min. drive across the Portage lift bridge to Michigan Tech. Pet-friendly with safe dog walking options. All are welcome!
Built in 1898 by the mining company, this salt box-style home originally had an outhouse where the birch is growing now. When a toilet was added, it was put in the basement because people couldn't imagine a toilet inside! Updated and remodeled in 2006,the plumbing and wiring were all replaced. It's got its original maple wood floors and sits on a Jacobsville sandstone foundation.
Tamarack City is between Houghton/Hancock and Calumet along M-26. Our neighborhood is an old mining location above the ruins of a copper processing mill. The mining company bought some of the homes from the Atlas Powder company in Dollar Bay and floated them across Torch Lake for use by its workers. They are all sided now, but underneath are the old logs used to build them. In the summer you can sit on the back deck and listen for the sand hill cranes who nest along Torch Lake. Our neighbor's bird feeder is visited by all the gold finches this side of the bridge. Enjoy the fall colors at the edge of the woods, and in the winter snow shoe up behind the house. Other than the robins singing in the morning in the summer and the chains of the snow plow rattling by late morning in the winter, the neighborhood is really quiet - you'll get a good night's sleep!
  • Cute place. Clean and very comfortable!

    Matthew2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Jane's place is fully loaded with all the amenities one needs for a weekend stay. A short distance away from Tech with a lovely view of the lake. Dog friendly is a great plus. We stay every time we are in Houghton, and will stay again.

  • Super cute yet spacious little house, perfect for visiting our son at Tech without staying amid the chaos of Houghton/Hancock for Winter Carnival. Extra touches include Wifi, Bluetooth speakers, games, coffee and plenty of hot water. Excellent hosts made it easy and pleasant to book and stay. We all loved this place!

    Carol2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • Although I didn't interact with Jane in person, she was very attentive and nice via messaging. The house was great, and it was very close to Houghton's shops and restaurants, as well as a couple hole-in-the-wall bars and shops. No complaints!

I am very picky about places I stay so was relieved to see how clean and cozy the place was. It also has all the amenities you would need. JoLynn was timely with the information required for check in and check out and quickly available for any questions we may have. I would definitely recommend this cabin.

The location is a quick drive from downtown, and makes for a quiet and cozy getaway. The cabin was clean and useful! We would definitely stay again our next time in Houghton.

  • The cabin was was perfect for our weekend to visit our son at MTU. It was 4 minutes from the cabin to campus and then to town and the peninsula. The two bedrooms were decorated nicely and life savers on the towels were a nice touch. The shower was nice and hot too! The kitchen was well equipped and the coffee for the Kuerig was perfect. We had a nice stay and would come back her again in a heartbeat. JoLynn was a great host and answered questions quickly and was genuine and kind. Great option over a hotel for sure. Would recommend!

Whether you come here for sightseeing during the color/summer season, snowmobiling/skiing/carnival in the winter, in the late summer for berry picking, or even a scholarly exchange, this place is ideal for your extended stay in the four-season Keweenaw area. Queen bed in the furnished basement room available. Driving to Hancock downtown is within than 5-10 minutes. If you are a first-time Airbnb guest, please communicate with me about your expectations, such as if breakfast included.
The house is fully featured with smart home automation. I rent out only the basement room where the entire basement is nicely furnished. You will have the freedom to access the entire basement with the total area of 1262 sq ft. The basement has the dryer and laundry machine with the bathroom as well. If you come here for a business trip, this may be a perfect place for you to iron your shirts and get ready for your daily meetings. During the summer, the basement can be damp so I have the dehumidifier turned on in order to assure the comfortable stay within the moisture level in the basement. In the winter, the furnace is powered by water heating system in which the pipe contracts and expands that generate subtle ticking sound from the boiler that can be noisy to a light sleeper.
The neighborhood is very quiet and there is access to the downtown Hancock as well as the portage lake.

The cabin has everything you'll need to enjoy a relaxing weekend, week, or longer. Fish for Northern and Walleye from the dock or our canoe. Enjoy breathtaking views and lots of wildlife. There are only a handful of seasonal cabins and year-round homes on Rice Lake. Our cabin is a very private lakeshore property that is accessed from a long winding driveway. Restaurants, groceries, gas, and ice cream shops are 7 miles away in Lake Linden. The cabin is an easy drive to any place on the Keweenaw including Mount Bohemia, historic Calumet and Calumet Theater, Quincy Mine, and scenic Copper Harbor.

Torch Lake Township, MI, United States

Prime location for trail and ski enthusiasts! Older, yet recently updated home with easy access to extensive system for snowmobiles, ATV’s and bikers. The multi-use trail directly across the street connects you to hundreds of scenic miles throughout the Keweenaw. Mont Ripley Ski Hill is just .5 mi away and Maasto Hiihto Nordic Trails a quick 10 minute drive. This clean, comfortable house has sleeping for a family or group seeking a convenient landing spot for all the Keweenaw offers.
While our home only sleeps 6 in real beds (1 queen bed and 4 twin beds) we have several air mattresses and a roll-away bed available for your use. We do not charge for extra people. Fully equipped kitchen. Dining space and living room with TV and WiFi. Main floor bathroom is small but sufficient - with shower and bathtub. Cold porch entry (typical of these older Copper Country houses) has small heater for bit of warmth. Stairs to rustic basement are narrow but lead to laundry facilities and better yet, a sauna! Easy to heat with electric stove. What better way to appreciate the Scandinavian roots of this area than by ending your day with a relaxing sauna. Small terraced yard in back, and while neighbors are close, there is a screen of evergreens providing more privacy. Parking space for trailer and multiple cars. Please note - This house is, unfortunately, not handicapped accessible as there is a flight of stairs leading to entrance of house as well as to second floor bedroom.
From snowmobiling, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter to hiking, biking and beach bathing in the summer, the Keweenaw is the perfect getaway.
  • Perfect!! Steve and Elizabeth’s place was great. Everything we expected and more. Book late last minute one night and the response was quick and we got right in! We were on a snowmobile trip with 4 adults. Plenty of room to sleep and more! Trailer parking right in the driveway, trail right crossed the street and even a snowmobile shop just In case. This place was sparkling clean and the sauna was a bonus! Thanks again.

  • Thanks so much Steve and Elizabeth. Great place. Super convenient on the snowmobile trail and near restaurants. Really liked being able to pull the sleds into the garage at night. Very clean and thankful for the water and pop in the fridge on our arrival. We will be back.

  • We returned for another weekend stay here having also rented last year. The outside and location may not look like much, but once inside you don’t really notice the road and are mainly looking at the back yard which is nice. The sauna is a treat after a day of nordic skiing and we loved being so close to the Michigan Tech Nordic trails. The welcome treats are always appreciated! This year we decided to walk to dinner downtown. It was easy getting to downtown, but with our tired ski legs quite a climb back up. We will be back again.

  • Great location on Lake Superior! Philip was a wonderful host and very responsive to all my questions and willing to give me any other help I may have needed. The cottage is well appointed and cozy. My Michigan Tech student and his friends were thrilled to have a homecooked meal, including grilled steaks, and a few hours away from the dorm. Would definitely recommend this property to my family and friends and hope to go back sometime.

Very clean. Great view. Cozy. Kitchen was rather well stocked in case you wanted to cook meals. Parking was nice and had plenty of room for our sleds. Stayed nice and warm inside despite single digit temps. Nice comfortable beds and clean linens. Washer/dryer present in case needed. No complaints!

    Toni2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • We had a Great stay and felt at home. Enjoyed the open and spacious feel with the sleeping area upstairs and the beautiful windows letting in lots of natural light. Loved the living and sleeping areas. Kitchen was well equipped and had a full size fridge to make fresh meals. Nice and peaceful scenery to appreciate, especially in the mornings—and even fun to watch the snowmobilers out the large windows. We liked the white linens and cottage feel. There was a ton of snow, and the driveway was plowed before we arrived. Plenty of room for our SUV. Loved the boot tray for our snowy boots. The owners were immediately responsive to our needs. Would definitely stay here again! (Mapping apps didn’t quite get us all the way there, but we recognized the home from the photos.)

Calumet Village is a historic district from the areas rich copper mining heritage. You are within the boundaries of Keweenaw National Park. The building your are staying in is well over a century old. Tin ceilings, plaster walls, and old woodwork have been preserved. The apartment building is within walking distance of museums, art galleries, restaurants, gift shops, pubs, the village park, and a laundry mat. Within a few blocks there is a grocery and a dollar store. MTU campus is 15 minutes.
The building you are in was originally offices above the first floor retail. Looking at the facade you can see this was originally two 2 story buildings. These were built in the 1880's. In 1905 the buildings were combined and a third floor was added.
The village is very walk-able. Museums and shops are all up and down Fifth Street. Fine dining and pizza places are within walking distance. Agassis Park is one block over on fourth street with tables, grills, horse shoe pits, and a basketball court. Many century old heritage sites are within the village limits. In the colder months the Swedetown trails and sled hill is not far a way. Mount Bohemia is further up the road toward Copper Harbor. For summer visitors there are many public parks, beaches, hiking, biking, and ORV trails, as well as many unique small towns each with their own special character and history.
  • The apartment is clean and spacious.

Private entrance to a spacious 2nd floor guest room & private bath (as well as a screened-in porch and first floor parlor), set in the quaint, picturesque lakeside town of Eagle River. Just out the door is Lake Superior, a sandy beach, river gorge, waterfall, sunsets & stargazing. No added cleaning fee.
This spacious and pleasant space will sleep 1-3 people. It is in an historic home that was built in the 1860's. In the past, the home was a boarding house, "Grandview." The guest room has three large windows that face the lake, with enjoyable lake breezes during the summer months. A private bath is across the hall, just off the bedroom. The bedroom is set up with both a double and single bed (to sleep up to three, or for extra sleeping space for restless sleepers.) We are confident that our guests will find this a comfortable and enjoyable place to call their temporary home. We have accomplished much in the 20+ years that we've owned the home...and the restoration goes on. A variety of recreational activities are available for all ages and skill levels. Explore the history of the area, or experience biking on beginner to world-class mountain bike trails. Hike, kayak, stroll the beaches, agate/rock pick, or simply relax in the natural beauty of the area. We are an easy drive to the dock for the "Isle Royale Queen" in Copper Harbor, which transports visitors to and from the Isle Royale National Park. Winter provides abundant snow for downhill and cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. We are ideally located just 16 miles from Mt. Bohemia and 30 miles north of Mt. Ripley/Michigan Tech. You will find "Grandview" a welcoming place to return to after a day of adventuring or an hour or so of relaxing on the beach.
Eagle River is a small lakeside town. Taking a short walk to the beach with your morning coffee is a beautiful start to the day. Eagles can oftentimes be seen scouting for their next meal near the mouth of the river. The town has three bridges, the historic Pratt Pony Bridge, over 100 years old, is just out your front door, and provides a spectacular view up the river gorge and down to the mouth at Lake Superior. The Eagle River Falls is just a very short walk up the street, across from the Township Hall (which houses the Eagle River Museum on the 2nd Floor.) Lake Superior is magnificent, and forever changing--offering up everything from soft and serene sunsets, to wildly crashing waves. There is more than enough to see and do here in Keweenaw County to pack an itinerary full of adventure and sight-seeing. But, if you'd prefer, you can just kick back, relax...and simply enjoy being here.
  • We loved our stay. The house was warm and comforting, a perfect escape from the cold outside. Our room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. Kathy’s assistance finding fun things nearby for us to do as well as her delicious breakfasts were the highlights of our stay. Looking forward to visiting again.

  • We enjoyed the location, and the house was very comfortable with a parlor and a fireplace where we enjoyed sitting. Kathy went above and beyond by picking us up along the highway when our truck broke down on our way - at least an hour drive for her. The location is right next to Fitzgerald's on Lake Superior, one of our favorite restaurants.

  • Our stay was perfect! Not only was the cabin nicely spaced out from the others, but the inside was decorated perfectly. We loved everything about it! We have stayed at about 15 AirBnbs so far, and this is for sure top 3! We have found that many places make things look "cute" but not comfortable. This is not the case for the cabin! The bed was very comfortable, with very nice sheets and comforter. It was a perfect stay!

  • Great place to stay! It was our second visit to JoLynn’s cabins, and Cabin #3 was just as nice as Cabin #1. There are a lot of thoughtful touches throughout the cabins, and they are very close to MTU.

  • Cozy, comfortable cabin with two bedrooms. 5 minute drive from Michigan Tech. I was pleasantly surprised with how effective the heaters were. Being a 'cabin', I thought the insulation may not be great, but even with low heater settings the cabin was quite warm. JoLynn responded quickly and informatively and was generally very helpful. I definitely recommend the place.

  • Andrew & Christina’s place is great! We came to Houghton to visit Michigan Tech with our son, so the location was perfect for proximity to campus and visiting downtown. Their home is comfortable and inviting. We especially enjoyed the comfy sofa! Their welcome binder was very helpful with local restaurant menus. And an assortment of coffees and snacks were ready for our arrival. We look forward to staying here again.

  • Andrew and Christina are great hosts. They were quick to respond and their place was very clean, well stocked, and the garage was a nice bonus. The welcome basket with water and snacks added an extra personal touch. We look forward to returning in the future.

A new refurbished cottage on Portage Lake ~ 6 miles from Houghton and Michigan Tech. University. Watch a sunrise while having coffee in bed, use a non-motorized recreational trail behind the cottage, catch fish from the dock, take a "refreshing" lake swim, have 'happy hour' on the lakeside deck, or evening coffee in the screened-in porch after a warm sauna. The kitchen is well-equipped, all linens supplied. Bottom line: a great place to just relax or for a family outing, and no cleaning fee..!!
Located on US 41, is it an easy 10 minute drive to the Isle Royale National Park Headquarters in Houghton, a 30 minute drive to the Airport, 45 minutes to the Keweenaw National Historical Park in Calumet, and 90 minutes to Copper Harbor.
  • We loved this cabin. Such a lovely spot on the lake. The sauna was amazing and we even jumped in the lake! We had everything we needed and were very comfortable. Thanks Martin and Mary!

  • Thank you for everything. We really enjoyed our stay. If our son becomes a “Husky” I’m sure we’ll be booking your place again in the future. Thank you again! The Suiter’s

  • Super clean and organized. Very convenient to Houghton and Michigan Tech. Terrific waterfront location. Excellent communication from the hosts

  • My husband and I absolutely loved Martin and Mary’s place! It had a great location so we could take day trips up to Copper Harbor and over to the Porcupine Mountains. We were in search of a cozy place to relax on our UP getaway and we found just that! The gas fireplace and outdoor fire pit were perfect for the cooler weather and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. We definitely hope we have the opportunity to stay there again!

  • Great place to stay.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this beautiful lakeside home. We spent the week there following moving our daughter in to Michigan Tech. The home was just right for my husband and me and our two teenage boys (they loved jumping off the dock and the sauna!). We enjoyed the spectacular lake views (lovely sunrises!) and lakeside fire pit (with plenty of firewood to use). The location was easy to find and being so close to Houghton and Keweenaw was just perfect. Marty and Mary were wonderful hosts! We highly recommend their home.

  • Excellent beautiful place. Host are wonderful people and the view is amazing. Very comfortable. Will definitely be back.

    Yvonne2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • Totally amazing lakeside cottage. Complete privacy. You don’t want to leave and sightsee. The lake just sucks you in to a peaceful comfort zone. Space for a group to be together but private. Decks, porches, fire pit, sauna, dock..what’s not to love. Being originally from here, I know they provide every comfort for a true Copper Country experience. Our grandchildren loved the lake and swam for hours. Just come and relax and enjoy the lovely surroundings.
