“At this humble shop, 80-year-old Mr Chan, one of Asia's few remaining master knife-sharpeners, uses nine different stones to grind each blade, and alternates between water and oil. If you bring him your blade, he charges between HK$100 and HK$600 with a three-month wait. But if you buy from him, and he has a great selection, he’ll do it there and then. Prices range from HK$200 for a small paring knife to around HK$2000 for a Shun knife. His customers include chefs, butchers, tailors and homemakers from all over the world. He’s had clients send him Japanese willow knives for his magic touch. Choppers, cleavers, slicers, paring knives, even scissors – he’s done them all. Find his shop close to Bowring St.”

“Fish are a symbol of prosperity and good fengshui, and are a central part of our culture and business here in Hong Kong. Most local offices will have a fish tank with vibrant fish to bring good luck! Goldfish Market is a fascinating array of marine animals featuring hawkers selling all kinds of marine pets like gold fish and carp. Even if you can't buy a pet, you'll get to experience all kinds of colours and life of the local Hong Kong.”

“Egg tarts, famous egg tarts. From the hungry onion: "Of HK’s many bakeries, the one which stood out in many people’s minds must be Tai Cheong (Est. 1954) on Lyndhurst Terrace, Central - it was the one mentioned by HK’s last British Governor, Chris Patten, as his favorite bakery in the colony. Chris Patten, affectionately nicknamed “Fei Pang” (Fatty Pang) was well-known among HKers for his gustatory exploits. He’d famously quipped that he “could not go a day without an egg tart from Tai Cheong”.”

“When I use to travel to Hong Kong I would always head straight to this Sheung Wan cafe directly from the airport. Fast forward three years and Cupping Room has expanded to now four locations, including most recently a flagship Roastery space in the very trendy area of Po Hing Fong. Three years ago I noted in my travel journal how great the cup of coffee was from here. I also noted that they were leading the speciality coffee industry in Hong Kong, through coffee experimentation, education and all round coffee excellence. I still believe they are at the top of the game, headed by Friend of mine Dawn Chan - Hong Kong Barista Champion 2014 and 4th placed World Barista Championship 2015. ”
