Your guide to Amelia Island

Welcome to Amelia Island

A delightful slice of Florida coastline in the Deep South, this relaxed 13-mile stretch of sun and sand is sometimes referred to as the Isle of Eight Flags. That’s because the barrier island has changed hands at least that many times. The Timucua people first settled here around 4,000 years ago, and the French, Spanish, English, Patriots, Green Cross, Mexican Rebels, Confederates, and the United States all claimed the territory at some point thereafter, in some cases more than once.

To soak up some of this history, head for the island’s downtown hub, Fernandina Beach, where a late-19th-century rail depot now serves as the tourist welcome center. City blocks abound with converted fishing cottages and Victorians with gabled roofs and verandas, many of which have been repurposed into shops, restaurants, and bars. The remainder of the moss-draped island is defined by its verdant parks, inland tropical forests, golf courses, tidal marshlands, and a shell-studded shoreline, along with the land and water adventures that have been drawing vacationers since the 1880s.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Amelia Island

If you like a low-key vacation with mild, warm weather, the best seasons for visiting Amelia Island are the spring and the fall. Of course, the destination is popular year-round and really goes off in the summer, when families from all over the American South converge on the island despite its rising heat, humidity, and rainfall. Temperatures dip a bit in winter, but it’s fairly dry, with plenty of sun and optimal birdwatching, making this another great time of year to visit. Note that demand skyrockets over Christmas holidays, which are reminiscent of peak summer crowds.

If you’re interested in attending some of the area’s beloved events, the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival happens in the spring, and celebrations of jazz and whales are put on in the fall.

Top things to do in Amelia Island

Fort Clinch State Park

Centered on a 19th-century fort taken by a Confederate militia during the Civil War, this sprawling 1,400-acre park also offers shelling beaches, a half-mile fishing pier, and idyllic trails for hiking and bicycling.

Kayaking

You haven’t truly visited Amelia Island unless you’ve gotten onto the water and paddled along a tranquil estuary in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard. Nearby outfitters offer ecotours, firefly tours, rentals, and even paddleboard yoga classes.

American Beach Museum

This museum offers a glimpse into a historic African-American beach community formed during Florida’s segregated Jim Crow era. The American Beach shoreline was constructed in 1935 to include Black-owned motels, restaurants, and nightclubs that featured performances from famous Black musicians. After a hurricane decimated the community in 1964, desegregation rendered a rebuilding obsolete.
