QUESTION & ANSWERS:

ABOUT THE CHALET

1. How is the chalet setup?
The chalet was originally purchased to be used with my family and friends. Therefore it has all the amenities and comfort that one could expect from someone’s home. It is our favorite place to escape to with my wife and children. We find the views in Grindelwald to be some of the most stunning of all the Alps. No wonder tourists from around the world come to Grindelwald each year.

2. How many people can stay in the chalet?
The chalet is setup for 10 people. With a baby or small child that uses the provided cot-bed you can have 11 people.

3. What is the layout of the chalet
• Ground floor, you have and entrance hall for ski boots (with ski boot/glove warmer), two bedrooms, one bathroom with double sink and shower, one toilet, kitchen with counter top bar (4 stools), dining room area (10 seats), living room and fireplace area.
• Upper Floor: you have the master bedroom, with en-suite bathtub, toilet and small sink. Across the hall is a bathroom with toilet, double sink and shower. There is a TV room with large couch, flat screen TV, and a small bedroom.
• Bottom Floor (lower level) there is a bedroom, a bathroom with bath tub, double sink and shower, the cave with washer/dryer, and a separate workout room.

4. What is the bedroom and bed Layout?
• Ground floor: first bedroom with King Size bed, second bedroom with Queen Size bed.
• Upper Floor: master bedroom with King Size bed. Small bedroom with two single beds (best for children as low ceiling).
• Bottom Floor (lower level): Queen size bed

5. What is the bathroom situation?
See point 2, there are in total 4 bathrooms (3 separate and 1 on-suite in the master bedroom)

6. How is the kitchen equiped?
The kitchen is fully equipped, with all the cutlery, plates, glasses, as well as pots and pans. There is a coffee machine (drip) and espresso style (you can get espresso type capsules in the grocery store), kettle to boil water, toaster, blender. There is a raclette machine and fondue pot. For the fondue, you will just have to buy the power flame (Sicherheits-Breenpaste/Gel combustible de securite).

Spices/Oils/Paper Towels/Supplies: we leave spices, cooking oil, and some basic supplies (a few dish washer tablets, some liquid soap for dishes, etc.). We ask our guests to simply replace what they finish, this way the chalet always has the basics. And it avoids you having to buy everything. I suggest you check what is there when you arrive before going to the grocery store.

LOCATION & ACCESS

1. How is the Grindelwald/Jungfrau region?
To quote an article in the New York Times from Barbara Cansino: “The Jungfrau, the Mönch and the Eiger, all in a row on Switzerland's Jungfrau massif, are among the world's mythic peaks, rising above the Bernese Oberland: a mountaineer's dream, a coveted view from an Alpine room, a distant vision from Bern to the Lake of Thun. The Jungfrau, 13,642 feet, is admired for its elegant white beauty. (Jungfrau means virgin.) The 13,449-foot Mönch has a rounded summit. The forbidding north face of the Eiger, one vertical mile of sheer rock and ice, the place where Clint Eastwood swung on a rope, has claimed many lives. The Jungfrau terrain is savage as well as sublime.” If you plan a trip to Switzerland, and want to get a sense of the extraordinary beauty of the Swiss Alps, this is probably one of the best places to visit. According to Expatica, it is ranked the top 3 place to visit in Switzerland, “making for truly enchanting views that embody the best of Swiss tourism.”

2. Location: where in Grindewald is the Chalet
The chalet is ideally located within a very short walk to the brand new V-Bahn main gondola up to both Mannlichen and Kleine Scheidegg ski areas (also to the Jungfrau Top of Europe). Or you can catch from there a bus to the departure station for the First gondola.

3. Does it get sunshine
Given that Grindelwald is in a valley surrounded by very high mountains, the sun passes behind the Eiger for most of the day and therefore many parts of the village and valley get little to no sunshine. If you are looking at different chalets, make sure you inquire about the location. The good news is that the chalet is situated on the South facing slope, so it gets sun all year round during parts of the day. In the heart of winter, when the sun is the lowest, it gets plenty of sun in the afternoon. This makes a tremendous difference as you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the sun. Chalets that are on the Kleine Scheidegg North slope, or lower down, or closer to the center of the village, get little to no sunlight, and the temperature can be up to 10 degrees Celsius colder.

4. How are the views from the chalet?
You have absolutely stunning unobstructed views of the mountains. From the chalet balcony you are looking straight at the North Face of the Eiger.

5. Is it quiet?
As the chalet is away from the main roads, it is extremely quiet. At night if you open the windows you can hear the stream flowing down below in the valley.

6. How can you get to the chalet?

BY CAR: you simply drive up to the chalet and park in one of the two parking spots below it. There is a Chalet M sign indicating the right spots. They are located right below the chalet.

BY TRAIN: Switzerland has an amazing train system, you can get to Grindelwald from any of the major cities with airports, whether it be Geneva, Basel or Zurich. It takes typically about 3 hours depending on the time of the day and the departure location. You can check the official sbb website for train schedules and connections.

7. How can we get from the train station to the chalet if we don’t have a car?

TAXI: you can contact Regiotaxi in Grindwald and book a taxi to the chalet. If you want other taxi options, contact the Grindelwald Tourism Office.

WALKING:
Train Station TERMINAL, Grindelwald:
It’s a 6 minutes walk from the Terminal Train station to the chalet. Below is a Google Map. Note that it’s a steep road up, in winter do not attempt with car, and if icy even on foot it can be challenging.

Main Train Station (Hauptbahnof), Grindelwald:
It’s 20 minutes to walk from the center of town. Below is the map from Google Maps.

8. How far is the chalet to the ski lifts?

The Grindelwald ski domain is composed of 3 ski areas: the interconnected Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen areas, and the separate Grindelwald First area. There are two different departure points, therefore plan well where you wish to ski.

I typically ski on the Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen areas, due to the easy access and parking. My favorite routine: I like to go up to Mannlichen in the morning, as the slopes get good sunshine and the lines are not that long, then in the afternoon I cross by ski over to the Kleine Scheidegg area (they are inter-connected). I finally then ski down to the base of the mountain. Make sure you check snow conditions and which ski slopes are open.

BY CAR:
To new V-Bahn for either Mannlichen – Kleine Scheidegg gondolas. There is a brand new indoor parking station just a 5 min. drive away.

To First Gondola: it is 8 min by car, however it is much harder to park. There is a parking by the Pfingstegg gondola, in google maps called Grindelwald LGP.
BY FOOT:

BY FOOT:
You can walk down the slope from the chalet to the new Mannlichen - Kleine Scheidegg V-Bahn gondolas. It’s about 7 minutes down by foot, and maybe 12 minutes back up as the slope is steep.

To get to the First Ski Area, you can go down to the V-Bahn Terminal, and catch the bus 121 or 123 to First. Given how challenging it is to park near First, this might be the best option.

9. What is there To Do in Grindelwald?

SUMMER:

Hiking:

There is amazing hiking in the whole Jungfrau area. To quote Joshua Hammer, from The New York Times:
“From May through October, the Bernese Oberland becomes one of Western Europe’s most challenging and beautiful hiking circuits. Snowy pistes morph into meadows speckled with wildflowers. Ski lodges turn into trekkers’ retreats, and the swoosh of skis and snowboards gives way to the rush of water from dozens of cascades and the tinkle of cowbells.”

We have nice maps at the chalet that you can use to help plan your day trips. If you need more information before your trip, you can get details (and free maps) from the Grindelwald Tourism Office, or there are many websites with tons of advice on the hikes in the region. There is also a hiking trail that leaves right at the chalet and goes up to Bussalp.

There are also beautiful hikes in the Lauterbrunnen area. It is just 25 minutes away by car. This is what The Rough Guide has to say about Lauterbrunnen: “It’s hard to overstate the impact of the Lauterbrunnen valley. An immense U-shaped cleft with bluffs on either side rising 1000m sheer, doused by some 72 waterfalls, it is utterly spectacular.” If you google most beautiful valley in Switzerland, Lauterbrunnen always makes it in the top 5. It’s a great place to simply walk or rent a bike and go along the valley floor to Stechelberg, or go up to the villages of Murren or Wengen and hike.

Adventure:
There are all sorts of exciting summer adventures for both adults and kids.

Some examples:
o Summer sledging/toboggan rides, (Rodeln in German) at the top of the Pfingstegg gondola
o The First Mountain Cart:
o The Mannlichen “gemeling”

WINTER:

Go skiing, ski touring, winter hiking, sledging (Bussalp is the longest toboggan run in Europe) and much more.

Ski Area:
You can either book the whole Jungfrau ski region (including the Murren area), or just the Grindelwald-Wengen area. I typically get only for Grindelwald-Wengen as you need to take a car or a bus if you wish to access the Murren ski area.

If you have a car, and want a change, it is a 29min drive from the chalet to the base station of Stechelberg, where you can access the Murren ski area. I recommend you leave early as the lines can be long since there is a single cablecar.

That’s it for today. As we get more questions from renters, we will keep editing this document. I hope we answered all your questions, and wish you a wonderful stay in the beautiful mountain town of Grindelwald !!!

I grew-up in Switzerland, and lived in the US, in London, in Zurich and Brussels. I love the mountains and all sorts of outdoor sports. Grindelwald is probably my favorite place in the mountains, thanks to the spectacular mountain views. In (Phone number hidden by Airbnb) I was lucky enough to buy a beautiful chalet, and renovate it. It is my (Hidden by Airbnb) from home, and every Christmas I go with my 3 children, and invite friends and family to share this incredible place together. I also enjoy going in the summer, for beautiful hikes up to mountain huts, or to go mountain biking.
