This one-bedroom villa is perfect if you want to live the tropical lifestyle. The main bedroom and living space, which we’ve individually designed with antique pieces, looks into a lush garden, whilst the bathroom is outdoors so you can shower under the stars. You have direct access onto a sandy beach for sea swims.

The space
Welcome to Villa Ambalama! An ambalama is a traditional Sri Lankan resting place. The highlight of staying here is our outdoor bathroom where you can shower under the stars!

The villa is very light inside thanks to glass panelled walls. The interior is open plan with an antique four-poster double bed with mosquito net, a desk, a sofa and an armchair. It feels really homely yet you’ll find no TV here. Perfect for creative minds and those in search of pure inspiration, you can relax with a book in the cool of the air conditioning, or open up the space and let the tropical breezes in. There’s a dining table for private outdoor garden dining. A Jaffna antique carved doorway leads into a large outdoor garden bathroom where you can shower under an open sky as the sound of water flows from the nearby water fountain.

The villa sits within a private estate of five villas immersed within tropical gardens bursting with fruit trees, exotic flowers and shrubs. An infinity swimming pool and a small spa for aromatherapy and Ayurvedic treatments are also shared with the other villas. The gardens are home to much wildlife, from monkeys, iguanas and mongooses to many exotic birds.

The garden provides direct access to a deserted swathe of sandy beach and the lapping waves of the Indian Ocean. You can swim in the sea here and there are some offshore reefs nearby for snorkelling and diving, as well as other leisure activities such as surfing nearby.

We have two other very unique one-bedroom villas on the estate that you could stay in so do ask us about these. Or, if you are looking for more rooms, perhaps as a large group, a yoga retreat or an intimate wedding celebration (up to 24 guests), you can book the whole estate.

We are on hand to help you with anything during your stay so please ask us anything! Our butlers and manager will also look forward to sharing their recommendations with you.

Weligama, Southern Province, Sri Lanka

We are located near Weligama, on Sri Lanka's dramatic southern coast, and a 45-minute’ drive from Galle. We have a long oceanfront and our sandy beach is mostly deserted. Weligama is the most renowned southern surfing destination in Sri Lanka, and nearby beaches such as Mirissa, Ahangama and Midigama also offer great waves for surfers of all abilities.

Other local activities close to us include snorkelling, diving, kayaking, bicycle trails, whale watching, tea plantation tours, yoga, stand up paddle boarding, Koggala Lake boat trips and walks around Galle Fort. Many more activities can be advised and arranged on request.

From Weligama it's easy to day trip to Sinharaja Rainforest, Yala National Park (for leopard safaris) and Udawalawe National Park (for elephant safaris).
