The space
The Yellow Hibiscus overlooks the 20 acre estate surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa. Enjoy active steam vents with pure water steam, warm ground and experimental hot tubs over steam vents. With no visible neighbors the property is secluded and peaceful with citrus, bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers.

The Yellow Hibiscus cottage has a queen size bed with a private lanai and ocean view. The second bedroom/living area has a trundle bed that expands to two twin beds for extra guests. There is a small kitchenette with all the amenities. The full bathroom has a extra deep sink also used by the kitchen.

We use natural cleaning products, non-toxic pest control. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions. Your host is available onsite.

Guest access
There is a gate to access our property and you will receive the gate code when you make your reservation. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. The property is very private and quiet. Your host is available onsite.

Guests can use the BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, tomatoes, banana, soursop, guava and avocado.

Other things to note
The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives.

The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.

There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 24 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions.

My husband, Elijah, and I moved to hawaii in 2015 after residing in Alaska for 20 years. We work hard everyday in efforts to make this place awesome. We love Hawaii and even though we were only a couple miles from the 2018 eruption we wouldn't trade this place for anywhere. Elijah is a mt. biker, engineer, and fixer of all the things that break around here. I am a dancer, gardener and cleaner of all the dirty stuff. Mostly, we are delighted to share this magical place with all the guests who are drawn here to experience the peaceful beauty and soothing sounds of nature.
