Room in a cottage

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Cosy, clean, en-suite room in gorgeous cottage in AONB. Surrounded by vineyard and fields, perfect for walking, cycling, sailing, photography.

Tasty dinner and lunch options a short drive away and Indian/fish & chips 30 min walk into the village, on a country road or across fields. Take torches at night.

Dogs by prior arrangement - message before booking. Males must be neutered (unless pups).

Live in host + dog.

No buses Sunday - taxis tho from Ipswich.

Guests need prior reviews to book.

The space
The charming cottage is surrounded by countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the Orwell and Stour rivers.

A chance to be really immersed in nature whilst you’re only 20 minutes drive from Ipswich, the A14 and A12.

We are in an off-road, rural location in the middle of a tasty vineyard and with neighbours’ horses, donkeys and chickens popping their heads over the back fence to say hello. (No cockerel thankfully.)

There are gorgeous walks directly from the cottage across the fields or down to the river.

Dog-friendly, dogs welcome by prior arrangement only. Please contact before making a booking to avoid disappointment. Male dogs must be neutered (unless pups).

There is a lockable outhouse to store guests’ bikes. E-bikes cannot be charged on the premises I’m afraid as there is no power to the outhouse and e-bike batteries may not be brought into the house for safety reasons.

I work for a local, classic yacht builder and live in with my dog, a 7 year old lurcher.

Guest access
Guests have access to the sitting room, garden room, kitchen and gardens.

There’s a kettle in the bedroom .

Gardens front and back which are lovely to eat in and in the cooler months there is a cosy wood burner in the sitting room - although this can only be lit when I’m at home.

Guests bringing a very young child will need to bring a travel cot.

During your stay
I live in and am available to suggest walking routes and local activities.

Other things to note
Guests must have prior reviews to stay with me as you are in my home.

There is a resident dog. Your dog may only be booked in prior arrangement before making a booking.

Guests have one shelf in the fridge and and a zip up cool bag in the bedroom to store food. Don’t leave anything where the dog may thieve it. Bedroom cool bag has refreezeable cooling blocks if you want to store cold drinks in your room. Please bring all your own supplies of tea and coffee, foodstuffs etc.

I’m sorry I can’t offer freezer space.

Very young children should have their butlers’ pack their travel cot.

The wood burner may only be used when I’m at home - ensures correct usage and safety, so guests don’t burn themselves or the house down.

Neighborhood highlights

The off road lane has just a handful of houses nestled in the bottom of a valley with the vineyard on the slopes surrounding. The valley is surrounded by fields and walking distance to the river Orwell with gorgeous views.

There is a pub in Shotley village serving food, and a shop/post office plus an excellent Indian takeaway and fish and chip shop, all within about 30 mins walking distance. Note though that this is along a country lane so you’ll need a torch at night.

As well as walks along the rivers Orwell and Stour there is excellent cycling here on the Shotley Peninsula.

Nearby is the HMS Ganges Museum. Shotley Church and historic war graves are at the top of the hill overlooking the cottage along with the commonwealth war grave cemetery.

The vineyard also has dining events and tours on occasion which can be booked through their website. See our guidebook for details.

Hi there Welcome to White Cottage. I live in this beautiful little cottage and am glad to share it with my Airbnb guests. My partner and I enjoy the outdoors , gardening and collecting things that drift in on the tide hoping to turn them into sculptures in an homage to Derek Jarman’s Dungeness dry garden. It’s a work in progress so might look more like Steptoe’s Yard in the winter.
