Prime Capitol Hill Area. This English basement apartment is the lower level of a Victorian row house 5 blocks from US Capitol & 6-ish blocks from Union Station Metro. Living area is a great room - includes sofa bed; kitchenette & center island, DW, electric range, microwave, French press, espresso maker & mini-toaster; Small Bedroom "cocoon" has queen size bed, reading lights & closet; Bathroom has walk-in shower & double vanity. AC, Internet, TV, W/D & shared patio. Unit is 525 sq. ft.

The space
Everything is newly updated, and we follow COVID-19 cleaning practices. The apartment has a special air cleaner, is private, quiet, about 525 sq.ft. and newly renovated -- all new appliances and furniture. You enter into a short hallway with a coat closet, umbrellas to borrow should it be raining, and a framed Mark Rothko print ... you can see the original at the National Gallery of Art which is just a couple of blocks past the US Capitol.

As you enter the "great room" that combines living area and kitchenette, you will find a sofa that makes into a bed, a comfy wicker chair, and a round coffee table. On the coffee table, there is a "WELCOME" notebook with rules, directions, nearby restaurants & grocery stores, "how to" use the appliances and lots of info about getting around and seeing the sights in the Washington area . The "WELCOME" book includes updates on Coronavirus Safety Rules for DC and the surrounding area - mask requirements, what's open, what's not. There is also a TV and lots of places to connect your phone & laptop. A note of warning .. Guests #3 and #4 choose between the sofa bed which is a single and firm and an EZ self-blowing up bed. We also offer a futon floor mat as alternative option if there is a small child. The etagere behind the comfy chair has magazines with best restaurant lists, books with things to do in Washington, and paperback books to share ... finish reading yours? Feel free to leave it and take one or two of ours.

The kitchenette area features a center island with two bar stools and a drop-leaf round table with four chairs. Refrigerator has French Doors and the range is electric with a microwave above it. The dishwasher is small but gets things clean and is a lot better than washing dishes by hand. If necessary, you can always run two loads. We offer snacks, wine, sparkling waterc and other munchies ready for your arrival and a bit of relaxation. There is a mini-toaster on the kitchen counter. Then, you can choose between using our espresso maker, bean grinder and coffee beans to make a gourmet coffee drink or, if you're in a hurry, choose between tea or Starbucks instant coffee. There are other kitchen amenities, too -- coffee cream, sugar, some herbs & spices for cooking, and enough kitchenware to cook a meal and make a salad and serve it to four.

The bedroom is small but has a comfy queen size bed with reading lights on both sides. Linens are quality. The closet has space to tuck away your bags and hang up clothes. You'll find a futon, and yoga mats in the closet, too. Because the bedroom is small, I like to think of it as like a cocoon ... so very quiet and private.

The bathroom has a walk-in shower with hand-held shower head as well as one on the wall. There is one sink in a double vanity with a lighted mirror above it. In the etagere, you'll find a fire extinguisher and first aid things on the bottom shelf, and on the other three shelves, there will be bath towels, hand towels and washcloths, a hair dryer, iron, spray starch and shower amenities. There is also a combination washer-dryer in the bathroom

You may also exit through the door in the bedroom to go up the outdoor stairs and find the patio ... chairs and an umbrella table. It's a perfect place to start the morning with your coffee, or to unwind at the end of the day with a glass of wine. There is also a gas grill, so if you want to grill, please do. Be sure to turn the gas off after you finish cooking. The patio is shared with your host/the home owner so maybe we'll have time to chat a bit there, too.

As your host, I'll be happy to answer questions via text and/or cell, and sometimes in person.

Where you’ll be

Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Our neighborhood is unique. You'll be staying at the close-in historic area of Capitol Hill where the U. S. Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress are only a few blocks away. This is the Senate side so the Hart, Dirksen & Russell Senate Office buildings are nearer than the House Office Buildings. From the Capitol, you'll just walk down the hill to find yourself at the East Gallery of the National Gallery of Art and then, all 15 of the Smithsonian's will begin to come into view. It's also only a short Metro ride to the baseball and soccer stadiums.

Originally, I am from Iowa but I've lived in DC for 25+ years. I have a long history in Iowa politics ... and here. My policy expertise relates to communications, agriculture and rural America ... also the Iowa Caucuses. I love people, entertaining, reading and learning, art and design, growing flowers in my garden, and international travel.

I've traveled in about 20 countries -- about half for work where I've spoken at int'l conferences and the others for fun. I like getting to know the locals, seeing how people live, going to art museums and also flea markets. My last trip was to Europe where I stayed in an Airbnb room/bath of a private home in Amsterdam and then in a 1st floor 2BR apartment in Paris. I travel with one wheelie bag -- on the small side. Generally, I like to stay in one place for several days or a week.

I read incessantly -- other people watch TV, but I read -- the Washington Post, the New York Times, political books and also romances, sci-fi, and murder mysteries. You'll find some of the latter in a basket in the apartment.

Airbnb asks whether I have a life motto? Looking at my life, I think mine must be, "Do whatever it takes! to make life happen!”

During your stay

ACCESS JUST FOR YOU: I share an entry code for the front door in advance so that there won't be a wait for you to get into the apartment upon arrival. When schedules match, I live upstairs and will occasionally greet you personally but during this pandemic, it is more likely I'll send you welcome note after you check in. You may count on me to be available via text and/or cell to answer questions. For additional assistance, one of the features of the apartment is our WELCOME BOOK. It offers detailed instructions about both house rules and pandemic rules, walking directions to the US Capitol, Metros, and nearby restaurant & shopping areas, how the appliances work, suggestions for favorite nearby restaurants, directions for transportation options and more.
