Founded in 1957, my grandfather, Eiichi Tanuchi, ran an inn called Aiwasho for the cultural development of Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. In order to continue to protect its history and traditions, his granddaughter, Kiushuko, reopened the inn under its original name in 2021. Built on the site of Ueno Castle, this inn is a traditional Japanese house with tatami mats on the floor. Please relax in one of the two Japanese-style rooms. The inn is located on a hill overlooking the city of Tanabe, so you can enjoy the morning sun, sunset, and night view. On a calm day, we recommend having tea in a wicker chair on the edge of the hinoki cypress wooden deck, which was made in the image of the moon viewing platform of the Katsura Imperial Villa. The newly installed bath and toilet are spacious and barrier-free, so you can bathe together or use them easily even if you need assistance. We installed popin.aladdin (lighting with projector) in one of the Japanese-style rooms. It projects on the sliding doors You can watch TV, music, movies, etc. Enjoy BGM on YouTube before you go out in the morning. My parents, Kisaku and Shuko Tanai (Japanese), live next to the house, so please let me know if you need anything.

The owner is a local Kumano Kodo guide, so we will do our best to accommodate your questions and advice about walking the Kumano Kodo, as well as pick-up and drop-off when you need it. Super friendly host and very charming old Japanese-style house. Cooking in the outdoor kitchen was a fun experience! The cluttered outdoor area added to the charm of the place and Eiko-san, and inside the house it was tidy and fairly clean!:) The area is super quiet and you can hear lots of birds, overall a very relaxing place. Eiko-san also has lots of good recommendations for nearby activities! However, if you’re a tall person - like my boyfriend - be aware that the doors are made for smaller Japanese people back in the day… lots of head bumping and headache potential if not careful! Since the bathroom is fairly small I went for a bath in a nearby bathhouse, a very short walk and very very affordable.

My son and I stayed with Miwa-san last year and had a fantastic time. On this year's trip to Japan, we are going to places we haven't been to before , but we both felt we had to include Susami again. Susami is a beautiful town, but what really makes the difference is the kindness of Miwa-san and her friends. We hope to visit again next year.
