The space
Canal and lagoon views stretch away from this restored piano nobile apartment in Venice’s Cannaregio district. The artist-beloved Italian light splashes across the terrace and streams through stained glass into rooms where philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once lived. It’s 15 minutes to the campanile and cafes in the Piazza San Marco.

Sip coffee in the morning and prosecco in the evening by the stone fountain on the apartment’s furnished private terrace overlooking the canal. Downstairs, a water gate leads from the canal to the palazzo where the apartment is located.

Terrazzo floors, ornate plasterwork, and leaded windows in the living and dining room evoke a bygone era in Venice’s history—but keep an eye out for the colors splashed across the contemporary paintings hung amid the delicate flourishes on the walls. Bookshelves and a pair of sofas invite you into the library, where a stained-glass door opens to the terrace. While the palazzo was built in the 1600s and the apartment features mosaics from the 1700s, the fully equipped kitchen is state of the art.

The apartment is in the district of Cannaregio on Venice’s north side, home to plenty of history—it was once the Venetian Ghetto—along with the city’s train station. It’s full of coffee bars and neighborhood markets to discover, and when you’re ready to sightsee, San Marco is only 15 minutes away.
