Mr. Nakazono’s place was amazing. He was very friendly over message and in person. He even recommended a scuba dive shop nearby for me.

Long stay - Yakushima South Village private room

SølviRating, 5 stars1 month ago
What a lovely relaxing environment, full of wood and calming spacial layouts. We truly enjoyed the communal meals with the other guests from all over Japan and the world. Although having a car would have been nice, we managed to hitchhike all over the island, meeting many wonderful people getting from place to place. Get your license translated prior to arriving! Sakurako was a very cute down-to-earth, straightforward, and wonderful host who thoroughly gets you oriented, then gives you your space, yet available when you have questions or need guidance. As a couple, we appreciated getting our room upgraded to a non-bunkbed room as there was one available. The location is walking distance to a nice swim/fishing spot, tidal onsen. Further on stop at the medicinal waters at Onoaida hot springs after hiking to/from Janokuchi Falls. Be sure to read the red "Welcome to Yakushima" guide on the way to the island or as soon as you arrive, it has much useful information.

[Ananda Chillage22] Breakfast, Jacuzzi, Ocean view

DavidRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Stayed at Shinji and Miki’s place while traveling solo through Yakushima. A peaceful, thoughtful home that reflects the hosts’ depth and kindness. They’re well-traveled, generous with their knowledge, and it shows in how the space is welcoming. The living room stands out. Light-filled, quiet, always prepared for breakfast and leisure study time. It became a calm part of the daily rhythm, something to look forward to before heading out to explore the island. Yakushima itself feels ancient and alive. Deep forests of thousand-year-old cedars, moss-covered stones, constant mist and waterfalls. Easy to see why it’s a UNESCO site. Hiking through those woods feels less like sightseeing and more like entering another world. The hosts offered just the right advice. Their home is also conveniently close to a local onsen, the combination of mountain air, hot springs, and the calm of their space made for a deeply restorative stay.

Long stay - Yakushima South Village family plan

LucyRating, 5 stars1 month ago
Away from the main port but a gem nonetheless! We didn’t have a car and we still had a wonderful time. Just don’t expect to reach all parts of the island with the bus. We loved staying with Mitsuru. Everyone at the hostel was extremely kind and the house is very spacious with great common areas. We even found a creek near by where we continuously went back to. If we could we would have stayed longer. Thank you ❤️

Nakazono-ryokan since1961

Good location, easy access to Sakurajima ferry, and the city tram system. The ryokan is a great value: simple, clean, nice owner. It is a good base of operations for exploring Kagoshima.

Convenient stay in the center of town. The room was perfect for the price, a little rough around the edges, but with all the things one needs. Comfy bed, hot water, lock on the door. The hotel had a lot of personality. Checking in was easy and the host was very responsive and flexible.
