What you'll do

After our meet up and introductions, we will dive right into the history of the Philippines!

We'll start at with the Oldest Stone Church in the whole archipelago and learn the backstories on how and why the Spanish even made it to this side of the world. We'll also learn what everlasting marks they left in the more than 300 years of their occupation.

Next, we cross the street and enter an expertly recreated 19th century aristocrat's home and marvel at the furniture, furnishings and designs that came about with the combined influence of east and west.

We then make our way towards a rarely visited part of the actual historic walls of Intramuros and try to glimpse at its wondrous past.

Then we go to another museum that will give us further insight to the old city of Intramuros and its intertwined history with the catholic church.

We continue on with walking through the old narrow streets and make a quick stop at a WW2 memorial where we learn about the Philippines and its role in this conflict.

Another quick stop at the Cathedral that represents the seat of the Catholic Church in the Philippines

Then we learn about the Filipino's fight for independence at the old military garrison.

Join me on this adventure through the old city of Manila as we take routes less traveled and discover wonderful corners and side streets very few get to see.

Hello!

My name is Jian. I'm the senior storyteller at Explore Manila Tours.

Because I am passionate and proud of my Filipino heritage I love creating authentic experiences for visitors who want to explore Manila with me.

As co-founder of this Manila-based tour and events company, I am focused on curating activities that are warm, authentic and meaningful.

My mission is to change the "Don't go to Manila. Go to the Beaches" mindset.

Sure, Philippine beaches are fantastic. But Manila is a terrific urban destination bursting with food, culture and history.

Join me and we'll take a dive deep into the heart and soul of Manila, Pearl of the Orient.

This is 1 of 3 experiences I offer here on AirBnb.

Jian was an amazing host. Though I am not a history buff, the way he shared the interesting stories, it felt like I was living through it. He seemed really passionate about history and tourism. Will carry the funny stories and the insights he shared back home :) Would recommend this tour to anyone who is in Manila and has not yet explored the historical aspects of the place.

Jian is an amazing and knowledgeable host! My Intramuros tour was the last tour of my trip, and undoubtedly the most special. He has a true talent in sharing stories and history with others - all with a few laughs and person stories along the way. I booked this tour last minute, and am so happy I did. it was a great way to learn the basics of Philippine history, more about Manila, and more about my culture. Thanks Jian!

While visiting Manila on business, my plans changed and I booked a last minute tour with Jian. He was very accommodating and provided helpful recommendations for traveling to the meet-up location. This was a wonderful introduction to the history of the Philippines and was extensive, but not overwhelming. The pace was good and there was a balance of walking and air conditioning, which is important in this heat and humidity! Jian is very knowledgeable and weaved in story telling, facts, and his personal experience throughout the tour. It really helped cement the history in my memory- later that night, I recounted much of it to my husband as I was excited to share all that I learned. Jian was extremely helpful and went above and beyond and provided restaurant recommendations around my hotel. I highly recommend this tour and am looking forward to doing one of his food tours before I leave!
