What you'll do

Doi Suthep is one of the iconic places in Chaingmai. Hiking from the base to the top aka. Monk's trail is popular among locals and foreigners alike. But Doi Sutep area is huge. There are many interesting hiking routes yet to be explored.

this hike starts at Doi suthep temple through jungle and stream to a Hmong village called "Khun Chang Kien" where we take a break for refreshment and lunch . We then hike back using a different route to Sai-Yoi and Monthathan Waterfalls. It is two of most majestic waterfalls of Doi Suthep national park. This is where our trip concludes. Guests can take some time to relax at the waterfall. Transportation to inner Chiangmai area is also provided.

Total distance is approximately 16 kilometers. 9 km for first leg before the break at a Hmong village and 7 km for second leg to the waterfall. it takes about 6-8 hours to complete depending on guests pace.

Since we start hiking from the top of the mountain, this hiking route has moderate elevation. (700 Elevation Gain). Guests will encounter evergreen forest and pine forest along the trek and hill tribe villege to explore. There are also strawberry farms and Coffee plantation along the route.

Where you'll be

Doi Suthep temple is one of the most sacred pagodas in Thailand. There is an lookout where guests can see Chiangmai city from the top. Khun Chang Kien is the Hmong hill tribe village where guests can explore at their leisure how they live on top of the mountain. They mostly engage in cold climate and high altitude agriculture such as strawberry and coffee. SaiYoi waterfall and nearby Monthathan at the end of the trail are well-worth your sweat.

This hike was a great experience. Chettaphon was very friendly and very knowledgeable of the forest and also was happy to share his insight on Thai culture. As for the hike itself, we did 20+Kms with a stop in a village. I found it challenging at times but feel very proud that I finished it.

I highly recommend the hiking experience with Chetthaphon. Although challenging, the hike was great as we went on trails that we basically had to ourselves. Luckily, we had beautiful weather without rain which helped in particularly slippery areas that I imagine would be even more challenging if it were raining. Chetthaphon is very friendly and it is clear that he is an avid hiker who loves trekking as well as his city. He also is very knowledgeable about Thai history and has no issue engaging in conversation on this topic. The trek took us to a Hmong village where we had lunch and chatted with some locals. From start to finish, the trek felt authentic and unique, we saw neighborhood farms, waterfalls and we even had a friendly neighborhood dog join us for the entire trip. I recommend this experience for anyone visiting Chiang Mai and wants to take a hiking trip with a local who knows the jungle trails very well and that enables you to explore the beauty of the nature in the area away from crowds.

This experience has far and above exceeded our expectation. Our host Chettaphon met us at the place and time agreed and from there onwards our day has been exceptional. From the hiking, spending time in the forest, getting to the Hmong village for lunch and then continuing on until we had reached the waterfalls, what we saw and what Chettaphon explained to us, all was great. Did I mention our host himself as a person? The added value of a genuinely nice / friendly person spending the day with you, explaining everything and answering questions cannot be overstated. He is personally passionate about hiking and exploring the region and it simply feeds into the experience. We understand that Chettaphon has started running this hiking experience (weekends only) relatively recently - I told him that I believe that if he continues with this long-term, he is bound to have all of his weekends booked well in advance by future visitors to Chiang Mai, as I am sure future guests would leave very positive reviews as well. Chettaphon - we absolutely loved the experience - many, many thanks.
