About your host

Originally from America, I have lived in Yamagata, Japan for two years, and am a member inbound travel company, The Hidden Japan. What we’ll do

We’ll start the tour at a 150 year old pottery workshop, one of the only two remaining artisan kilns in the village. Because the raw materials (taken from the neighboring mountain) have certain unique characteristics, the molding method is also somewhat different from conventional pottery. But we'll show you everything you need to know to make a beautiful souvenir, be it a dish, bowl, or your own…

What else you should know

Pretty much everything is indoors, however we will be walking on foot (about a block) between shops. Please note that I can often accommodate dates/times other than those posted on the calendar. For other experience availability, please inquire.

What I’ll provide

Snacks
Various natural, locally produced drinking snacks provided with sake tasting
Drinks
Sake tasting (four pours); juice option available for non-alcohol drinkers and children
Equipment
Raw material, workbench and instruction for pottery workshop

Where you'll be

Hirashizmizu is an ancient pottery village surrounded by nature, and today, home to a number of traditional craftspeople. The ceramics kiln resides in an ancient kura (traditional Japanese storehouse), which we will also get to tour. Up the street, the sake shop not only has a great curation of sakes, but also carries a variety of locally produced drinking snacks. Heisenji Temple is home to a massive weeping cherry tree, which we can also visit.
