What you'll do

Treat yourself to a creative textile workshop combining Batik and Mud Cloth!

Mud cloth – also called ‘bogolan’ – is one of Africa’s most unusual and unique textiles. The usual pattern of geometric lines and dots, in high contrast of black and white, or any color of your choice is the look.

In this 2.5 hour workshop, we will be designing and creating the mud cloth ‘look’ through wax-resist (batiking) and dyeing technique (dye bath.)

We won't be digging real mud (thankfully!) but you will learn to use hot wax to design mud cloth inspired pattern on a cloth and produce one of kind fabric piece that's authentically yours. You will use and explore the world of batik and Mali mud cloth using traditional batik tjanting tools in my studio that are from Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

You will also learn the steps in textile dyeing in this creative class.

Enjoy your travel, explore traditional textile art and create beautiful Miami keepsakes combining Malaysia and Mali culture in one!

Where you'll be

We will conduct our workshop at my Aventura home studio where all my works are created. The area is known for condominiums and Intracoastal living. During our break, we can walk along the Marina or sit by the water fountain in the courtyard. My studio is five minutes away from world-class shopping (Aventura Mall) and dining for your enjoyment before or after class. Also, Sunny Isles Beach is just 3.5 miles east.

Munirah is very professional and willing to help. She is absolutely amazing! She wants us to focus on things that are meaningful to us. If the pattern is difficult, she would help us. Even though she had a busy day, she is still there to wait for us patiently. She has a passion for life and values people. I wish more people could get to know her and batik making strategy. Munirah will tell you what ingredients are used and their functions.

This art experience was the most expected one in our 4-day Miami trip, and it turned out great as it met and exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend trying it for the artistic enjoyment and the brilliant host. We absolutely enjoyed the workshop where we got to design our own piece of fabric and follow the demos of techniques to turn our ideas into presence. Passion and patience of the host are the spices of this whole experience. She created a comfortable environment for everyone to stay (and make art); besides this, she generously shared her pearls of knowledge and insight into every part of this traditional dying technique! The afternoon of art past, but The moment of joyful experiences Remained on "bogolan" pieces Where batik tjanting tool touches. On textiles, Imagination never dies.
