What you'll do

Encounter the history, culture and architecture of Cholula.

First, we will meet at the Portales of San Pedro Cholula, the millennium-old town outside Puebla. We will walk through the main square and into the 16th Century Convent of San Gabriel Arcángel and its Capilla Real, to discover its unique architectural features and fascinating history, as well as the traditions of Cholula, where Spanish-Catholic conquests met indigenous rituals which take place to this day.
From there, we will immerse ourselves in the scents, sounds and sights of the Mercado, full of fresh produce and booming with color. Here we will stop for a few minutes and you will be able to order a traditional cemita or quesadilla.
After a quick bite we will head to another 16th Century chapel to admire its altarpiece and learn about the traditions of Cholula, where Spanish-Catholic conquests met indigenous rituals which take place to this day.
Next, we will walk under and through the largest-based pyramid in the world, and walk up to the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, which sits on top of the pyramid.
Finally, we will end our trek with a cold beer a few blocks from the pyramid.

We feel much more connected to the history and culture of Cholula now. Mary grew up near here and was marvelous with her insights and knowledge. We talked about art, politics, archeology and economics of the region. She tailored the trip to our needs. We had a great meal in the market to complete our perfect time together.

This tour was lovely. I was the only one in the group but we ended up having a good time with Maria. She has lots of good stories to share about Cholula, its history and its art. Recommended!

Maria gives a fantastic tour of Cholula. She draws from her personal and professional life to add color to the place. She unpacks the history in a manner different from the usual narratives of most tour guides. I would highly suggest booking this if you are visiting Cholula.

We really enjoyed our tour with María. The tour of the pyramid was really good as she was able to give us insight about the untouched part of the ruins versus those that had been restored and were no longer original. This is not communicated at the sight through the signs. She also thoughtfully supplied water and snacks for us and frequently asked us along the way if she could answer any questions we may have or if there was something else we might want to see or know about. As we're still learning Spanish it was fun to ask her about how to say things or communicate in Spanish which was very helpful, especially in the market. We would certainly recommend this tour for visitors wanting to know a bit more detail about Cholula.
