What you'll do

Everyone knows about Kyoto's famous rock gardens and resplendent temples, but did you know that beneath it all is a huge body of water? This water is mostly hidden from view but it makes an appearance when it gushes out of wells in the middle of the city.

Gulay and I host the 100% 5-star-rated Hidden Water Cycling Tour of Kyoto, where we focus on Kyoto's special connection to water. We filmed high-quality videos together and Gulay will be meeting you on this online version of the cycling tour. After a quick round of introductions, you'll Zoom Around Kyoto on her bike!

Gulay will first take you to her favorite shrine where she personally knows the priest, and then up along the Kamo River, the main river flowing through the city center. You'll then enjoy the sounds at a garden built by Japan's third prime minister, where wildlife and plants of all kinds still thrive because of the flowing waters.

Afterwards, you’ll visit a shrine built to repel the flu pandemic of 1,020 years ago, and participate in a simple ritual to hopefully end the pandemic of our times. We end the trip at a teahouse that has been run by 25 generations of the same family. They have made rice cakes from the well on their premises for 1,018 years.

Come, and you’ll get to know how water has deeply affected spirituality and culture in Kyoto.

I'm Lee. I was born in Singapore and worked across Asia on films commissioned by Al Jazeera English. Gulay and I co-host the 100% 5-star Hidden Water Cycling Tour of Kyoto (https://abnb.me/GNsgA7JMiab). Gulay shall be your host on this virtual version of that tour.

Gulay is a huge coffee lover who is super picky about her water, and her obsession led to us digging into historical records together. She used to be a guide in Istanbul, and for over 10 years she guided thousands of people through Turkey's best sights as a specialist in Christian and Islamic history. Gulay will draw on her deep knowledge of archaeology and medieval history to bring your attention to the whimsical, the fantastic, and the obscure hiding around the corner.

With the high-quality video we have shot around the city you too shall deep-dive into Kyoto's history.

Overall a good experience. I didn’t know anything about Kyoto, and this gave me a clear insight of its culture and the way of life. I liked that we had the opportunity of talking with people from other countries.
