What you'll do

The excursion starts in the evening at 7 pm and lasts for 5-6 hours. During the dark months (September to April) we are hunting the northern lights that so many come to experience in the north. The excursion starts by the Arctic Cathedral on the mainland side of Tromsø, and we will drive to Kvaløya (the Whale Island).

On Kvaløya we are going to visit Ersfjorden, one of the many fjords with a fantastic view of the open sea. After Ersfjorden we will drive to one of the nicest beaches in the north - Grøtfjorden beach. You might feel like a dip in the Barents sea, so bring a towel :-)

There are going to be several shorter stops along the way, and one main stop in Grøtfjorden where we eat a pre-prepared meal and have some hot chocolate.

I am a native "Tromsoværing" that has a full-time job as an expedition leader along the Norwegian coast with the Hurtigruten cruise line. I have a formal guiding education from the north of Norway and Svalbard and have spent a lot of my spare time outdoors with my children, by myself and guests from all over the world.

Over the last 10 years, I have been doing nature- and northern lights photography, and is now teaching my guests how to get the most out of their camera gear. When not traveling the coast I am also running a small guiding company focusing on slow adventure excursions with small groups in the Tromso area - both by car with longer stops and hiking if the weather permits it. With roughly 30 years of experience in the arctic, I give guests experiences in nature they are not likely to forget.

Where you'll be

Kvaløya is the fifth largest island in Norway. There are about 13.000 people living there, alongside 600 reindeers.

Ersfjorden is a fjord pointing to the west. Here we have a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the fjord. If you have seen 3 northern lights pictures from Tromsø, you have probably seen one from this location.

After Ersfjorden we will drive towards Grøtfjorden, a popular beach during the summer.

Reidar took us to the most incredible point in Kvaløya (if I remember correctly). The place was wonderful, and we had the pleasure to contemplate two hours of northern lights around a bonfire, eating Norwegian stew. This night felt safe, heartwarming and unforgettable ! Last but not least : hunting for northern lights can be tricky and you are at the mercy of the forecasts : when he saw the forecasts, Reidar kindly offered us to move our evening to another date, to be sure to find those lights ! Thanks Reidar, I'll definitely come back
