What you'll do

We will meet near the Van Staden's Gorge, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Jeffrey's Bay. From there we will walk into the gorge that runs parallel to the beautiful Lady's Slipper mountain. Both the mountain and the gorge are extremely beautiful. They are both characterized by a unique 'rockiness' that is simultaneously harsh and inviting. The deep chasm of the gorge is uniquely peaceful.

I will act either as tour guide, if that is what the person or group wants from me, or as a facilitator of an 'embedded experience'. By 'embedded experience' I mean that I will spend some time setting the scene for the walk into the gorge. For example, one can simply do the walk with their mind doing what it usually does, or one can cultivate their awareness of certain features of the experience. With my academic expertise and extensive experience in putting theory into practice, I will provide the conceptual tools that allow one to 'be in the experience' that resonates with the practice of philosophy as a way of life.

Ideally we would swim in the refreshing and invigorating waters of the river that runs through the gorge. Whether or not we swim, we will spend some time alongside one of the river's fresh-water pools, taking in the unique energy of our surrounds.

I have a PhD in Philosophy, and I have taught the subject (as well as other academic subjects) since 2006. One of my subject specialisms is philosophy as a way of life as written about by Pierre Hadot, a renowned philosopher. Philosophy in this format is something that cannot be contained within the walls of a classroom. Instead, philosophy involves the cultivation of specific ways of looking at the world.

One of the ways in which ancient Greek philosophers cultivated philosophical perception was to concentrate with deep intent on the experience of being part of, and intimately connected with, nature. My academic and teaching background, combined with my deep passion for being in nature in a mindful manner, makes me well suited for providing unique perspectives on the experience of being in the great outdoors.

Where you'll be

The gorge has been cut over the millennia by a river of fresh potable water. It has high cliffs that tower above us as we walk into the gorge, and we have several options for fantastic swimming experiences.

We have options for where to enter the gorge. One entry point is more private and remote, but requires a higher level of fitness. The other is easier, and also involves passing an old reservoir dam that has it's own unique feel to it.
